To the editor:
I have always greatly admired those who are qualified and feel called to serve their community. This admiration includes, in no particular order, and is not limited to — law enforcement, firefighters, medical personnel and those who run for public office. I was appalled, then outraged to read the statements made by one who recently ran for public office, but was not elected. In the same forum he was seeking to join, he denounced some of our fellow citizens for making a legitimate and legal request for swapping services rendered — i.e., improvement of town-owned roads in lieu of taxes.
His words and tone were reminiscent of the abuses in the Deep South prior to the 1960s and the Civil Rights Movement. As I recall, one of his campaign slogans was “For the people.” Based on his recent comments, one can only assume he meant “For some of the people.”
Prejudice is offensive and is not to be tolerated. In my opinion, this candidate deserves to be barred from attending all future council sessions and disqualified from ever again running for any office. His own words prove he is not qualified for any position — including zookeeper.
