Lawmaker is an opportunist

To the editor:
Your front-page article with Michael Willette’s smirking face and declaration he’d “switched political parties” aroused a considerable amount of “negativity” in our household last Wednesday. We hope it did elsewhere too. We also hope it motivates people to stay involved with the political process and not allow cynicism to stifle action, and reaction.
The “ideology” Willette lays claim to is more akin to aligning himself with the party in power than to being the “constituent legislator” his son asserts he is. He apparently left his Independent identity to sign up with Democrats when they were in power, and has now done the same that Republicans are.
We wonder if “Representative” Willette appreciates that 62 percent of the voters were opposed to the governor he will serve. Nonetheless, at least LePage ran under his true colors. Willette’s maneuvering can only be construed as treachery and deceit. If his convictions run so deep, why did he not switch affiliation well before the election and get his name on the Republican ticket?
Republicans should be wary of welcoming Mr. Willette into their ranks. Once a traitor, perhaps always a traitor?
