Sgt. Barnes lays down law

for Probus Club

PRESQUE ISLE NEWS

Members of the Probus Club of Central Aroostook met on Oct. 21, at Northern Maine Technical College with 20 members in attendance.
Pearl Carmichael began the meeting with a poem entitled “It Couldn’t Be Done.”
Guest speaker was Sgt. Mark Barnes of the Presque Isle Police Department. Barnes talked about the rank and structure of the PIPD. He spoke about the training of officers, new laws, the amount of quality equipment that they have and an overview of several phases of the department.

Following his talk, he answered questions from the members regarding a variety of concerns that we, as citizens, have, including safety concerns of people rollerblading in the streets, the motorized scooters on the roadways and ATVs. Another area that was discussed was the safety of crossing downtown Main Street. Barnes explained that the lights and cross lights are of utmost importance to people crossing the street.
The use of the two trained canine members of the department, Hunter and Dozer, generated a lot of interest and some questions. Hunter is a Bloodhound who lives with a police officer and travels in his patrol car. He is used to find people who are missing and perhaps in trouble. Dozer is trained to find drugs and he also lives with a police officer and travels in his vehicle.
Following Barnes’s presentation, Pearl read an ‘obituary’ from the London Times entitled “Common Sense.” The reading was about the demise of Common Sense in our lives.
Delores Woodman told of her life growing up on a farm in Washburn and traveling to school on a horse-drawn wagon with a wood stove for warmth. She has certainly had a diversified journey which included being an artist, teacher aide and assisting in the family business.
During the business meeting it was motioned and voted to take $2.50 per members from the treasury for the Charter of our chapter of Probus.

After lunch, the club held an auction. Donald Devoe was the auctioneer; he did a great job. Barbara Buchanan helped deliver the items to the lucky bidders.
Birthdays for November are Donald Devoe on the 23rd and anniversaries are Peggy and Calvin Tuttle on the 16th, Joe and Willetta Gaston on the 30th. Congratulations to all of you.

Star City Extension

On Oct. 25, 17 members and four guests attended the Spragueville Homemaker’s Extension annual supper/guest night, held at the Cooperative Extension office building on the Houlton Road.
Member Rose Barnes gave the blessing, prior to all enjoying the delicious potluck meal. Following the supper, new president Sylvia Harper thanked the food leaders for the planning and preparing of the event, plus all those who brought food to share.
Following dessert, President Sylvia called the business meeting to order. The Homemakers’ Creed was then recited by all members. In the absence of Secretary/Treasurer LaVone Walters, Marilyn Wheeler took roll call, recorded volunteer hours, collected yearly dues and “Coins for Caring.” No detailed secretary or treasurer reports were given and there was no correspondence to be read. It was agreed that cards be sent to LaVone and Elaine Harper by the “Sunshine Lady” Lois Griffin.
Ann Knight stated that a “moving away” gift card had been presented to former President Tammy Wheeler, in appreciation for all her work in the Spragueville Extension.
Due to LaVone’s absence, Ann then read the list of the extension’s planned activities for the 2011 season, for those who were not present at the September planning meeting. The group will be extremely busy in the coming months, assisting with several community events: stew night/pie sale at the Presque Isle Snowmobile Club in January; assisting at the annual OTC Fun Day; assisting once again at the Take It Outside Fun Day at Aroostook State Park; also the group has been contacted about possibly supplying soups at the Biathlon World Cup competition at the Nordic Heritage Center.
At this time, Sylvia, Marilyn, Rose, Lois and Mona Cyr gave follow-up comments on the state meeting of the Maine Extension Homemakers Council, which was held at the University of Maine-Farmington, on Oct. 22-23. From all accounts, there was a good business meeting and wonderful musical entertainment by a high school group following the banquet on Friday night. All in all, the ladies reported a very enjoyable weekend was had by all.
On Oct. 9, seven Spragueville Extension members attended the County fall meeting, held at the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church in Presque Isle. County President Tammy Wheeler announced that she would be leaving the area and moving to Scarborough. Thus, Vice-President Dora Leavitt, of the Caribou Homemakers Extension, would be assuming the president’s position. However, due to other commitments at the present time, Dora will be temporarily assisted by former County President Carolyn Kelley, of the Caribou Night Extension.
Following the County business meeting and luncheon, Marilyn Wheeler gave a very interesting presentation that she would be giving at the fall MEHC meeting in Farmington, along with presentations of other former state presidents, in conjunction with the MEHC’s 60th anniversary this year.
It was voted at the County meeting to use “Photography in the County” as the 2011 fair booth’s theme.
It was announced that the 2011 fall state meeting will be hosted by Aroostook County in Presque Isle.
Prior to adjournment of the Oct. 25 meeting, door prizes of pumpkin napkin holders with matching napkins were drawn and won by Viola Beaulieu, Carmen Wiggins, Blanche Beckwith and Marie Page.
