Business gives the gift of higher education

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A local restaurant will be offering the gift of higher education through a scholarship program it recently established that will include a variety of fundraisers.

“We’ve been asking our guests to complete comment cards which we’ll keep. Then in the spring we will draw one and that person gets to choose who receives the scholarship, which is good for anywhere in the U.S. or Canada,” said Jan Lucas, events manager for The Crow’s Nest Restaurant and Events Center, located on Maysville Street.

Lucas said the drawing will take place each year in April, with whoever completed the comment card making the final decision as to where the money goes.

“Whoever completed the card drawn will choose a recipient to receive at least a $1,000 scholarship to an American or Canadian educational facility. The recipient can be the person whose card is drawn, a family member, a friend or whoever they choose,” Lucas said.

Lucas said The Crow’s Nest will donate $1,000 plus proceeds from fundraisers held throughout the year.

“We’re planning a gift-wrapping event and will add proceeds from anything else we may decide to do,” said Lucas, adding a friend of the owner came up with the wrapping idea. “The idea for ‘The Crow’s Nest has Christmas All Wrapped Up’ was made by Jenny McPherson, a friend of the owner and frequent customer at the restaurant. She initially thought it would be a good idea to have it the last two days before Christmas for the guys who leave shopping until the last minute, but we expanded it to the whole week (before Christmas) so that all can enjoy the service.”

For a minimal fee per gift, patrons can having wrapping down as they enjoy a meal in one of the dining areas or a drink at the bar.

“We are charging $1 per gift and the proceeds will be added to the $1,000 already in The Crow’s Nest Scholarship fund,” said Lucas. “We will wrap anything, even one of our gift cards.”

Lucas said she’s looking forward to the event.

“I am hoping it will be fun doing the wrapping — and very helpful to those last-minute guys and gals,” Lucas said.
