Family Art workshop at Mill Pond

The first workshop in a series of three family art workshops sponsored by the Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project  was held Nov. 30 at Mill Pond School.
The workshop was the first of two Fabric Art Workshops to be held in the After-School Program for grades 3-5. The class focused on making origami shapes with fabric. The initial class created origami flowers to be placed on a small wall hanging.

The second class consisted of making an ornament (one for the child and one for the parent) to be displayed or hung on a tree. All materials were provided for the workshop.
Leigh Griffith, fabric artist, conducted the workshops. Griffith’s work can be seen at Visions on Main Street in Houlton.
“Students and parents alike enjoyed working with the artist and the medium,” said Mill Pond teacher Stacy Ramsey.
Ramsey saw the workshops as positive, providing family time, a chance to become more familiar with local artists, seeing art as an integral part of the community; exposure to unique media; seeing the validity of art first-hand; a learning experience for all; and a small group setting was beneficial.
The workshops were offered as an opportunity for a parent and child to participate together in an arts project. Funding for the classes was provided through a grant from the Maine Community Foundation.
