Now that the holidays have come and gone, schoolgirl basketball teams can focus on the task of winning basketball games with the hopes of making the playoffs. The regular season continues to roll and a number of Aroostook County squads are experiencing their fair share of success.

The Caribou girls (2-4, 7.7160) are eighth and still in the playoff mix as the top 10 squads make the postseason.

In Eastern Class D, Washburn (5-1, 15.2415) is in second place. Fort Fairfield (3-1, 6.3090) is currently in fourth place, while Limestone-MSSM (1-6, 3.0864) is 10th place).

The following is a recap of games played through Monday.

Fort Fairfield 56, Easton 33 — At Fort Fairfield Thursday, in a game closer than the final score indicated, the Tigers emerged victorious over Easton. Amanda Hotham netted 29 points (a season high), including 16 in the final quarter. Sydney Churchill added 10 for the Tigers, followed by Danielle Tracy with six.

John Bapst 41, Caribou 26 — At the Bangor Auditorium Thursday, Caribou was unable to overcome a hot start by the Crusaders.

“We were never able to find our stroke,” coach Ryan Deprey said. “We got some good looks and played good enough defense in the second and third quarters to get back in the game, but we were unable to find the bottom of the net. We’ll get them [John Bapst] at home!”

Jamie Martin, Dayna Michaud and Katelynn Tardie each scored five points for Caribou.

Caribou trailed 18-4, 24-15 and 28-17 at the quarter breaks.

Van Buren 66, Limestone-MSSM 45, — At Limestone Wednesday, Dec. 29, Amanda Allen netted 10 points in the losing effort for the Eagles. Danielle Pelkey added nine and Melissa Cantafino eight.

For Van Buren, Parise Rossignol tallied 37 points.

Central Aroostook 47, Washburn 38 — At Washburn Dec. 28, Vicki McIntyre tossed in seven of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as Central Aroostook handed Washburn its first loss on the season. Rachael Grew added 15 points as part of a two-player scoring machine for the Panthers.

Carmen Bragg’s 13 points led Washburn, followed by Rebecca Campbell with 10.

CAHS led 12-6 and 19-18 at the half before Washburn went up 32-31 after three stanzas. The Panthers outscored Washburn 16-6 in the final period.

Caribou 46, Mount Desert Island 41 (OT) — At Bar Harbor Dec. 28, the Vikings picked up the overtime win thanks to a 20-point effort from Jenna Selander and Alexa Massey’s 15 points.

“We were down by eight in the fourth quarter, with about five minutes to go,” coach Deprey said. “We were able to get to within two with 13 seconds. Jenna was able to get by her defender at half-court, drew a double team near the free throw line, and then dished the ball to Alexa for a layup to send the game to overtime.”

In the extra period, Caribou went on a 7-2 scoring run to ice the game.

“We were also able to hold Megan Phelps – the [Big East] Player of the Year last season – to just six points,” the coach said.
