Staff members at the Caribou Public Library peruse information pertaining to the e-book collection  of more than 1,400 titles which are now available through the Maine InfoNet Download Library. The local library is one of 140 public libraries in Maine now capable of offering free downloadable e-books to library users. From left are Tonya Peterson, Liza Guerrette and Diane Dubois, library director.

“This collection is offered through Overdrive, the current leader in the e-book lending market,” “said Dubois, “the e-books can be read on Mac or pc computers, using the free Adobe Digital Editions software, and can be transferred to the Barnes & Noble Book, Sony e-Reader and Borders Kobo and others.”

“Unfortunately, Overdrive e-books cannot yet be read on Amazon Kindles,” Dubois stated, “due to licensing and format incompatibility. On iPhones, iPads and Androids, individuals can download e-books directly into an Overdrive app. (In addition, e-books can also be transferred to an independent app called BlueFire Reader, with a few more steps.”

Interested users must have an active library card and are encouraged to go to the library’s website at www.caribou.public.lib.me.us to access this new service and find a complete guide to compatible devices.
