Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will host the annual Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance Feb. 11 from 7-9 p.m. The cost is $7 per couple. Music will be provided by “Hits on the Run.” All girls in grades K-6 are invited to come dance, socialize and enjoy some great refreshments.

Hot Shot competition

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department and MRPA/Red Claws are pleased to offer the Hot Shot Competition. This event will be Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 2 and 3 from 5:30-7 p.m. Youth ages 9-18 years old are eligible to participate in this free event. Hoop Shoot

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department and the Knights of Columbus will host the Hoop Shoot foul shooting contest Jan. 29, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. There is not charge and the event is open to girls and boys ages 9-18.

Grades 3-4 basketball

On Jan. 14, Michigan bested Arizona, 31-19. Michigan’s Erick Tompkins had a game-high 21 points, while Josh Rooney had four and Drew Cameron, Colby Buckley and Madison Bubar added a hoop each.  As for Arizona, Jason Dumais led the way with 10 points, with Izack Sprowls adding four points, Mark Graves three and Patrick Lessard two.

The second game that afternoon saw Syracuse down Duke, 18-15. Syracuse’s Riley Kinney led the winners with eight points, followed by Jonah Hudson with four and Ifeanyi Sargent, Cole Paterson and Andrew Hewitt with two each. On the other side of the court, Duke’s Zech Morse had a game-high nine points with Jaren Winger chipping in with four and Jacob Bonville adding a hoop.

Michigan faced off against Duke last Tuesday and Winger led Duke with 11 points as his team came out on top, 27-22. Morse totalled 10 points and Michael Berube six and dished out six assists. Michigan’s Tompkins had a game-high 18 points, with Rooney and Isaac Currier both adding two points each.

The late game saw Syracuse upend Georgetown, 16-10. Syracuse’s Kinney was a jump shot machine and scored eight points from the field, followed by Jonah Hudson with four points and Ifeanyi Sargent and Cole Paterson each with a basket. Georgetown’s Alex Churchill and Jacob Martin both had four points, while Ethan Jackson chipped in with two.

Last Wednesday in girls’ action, the Irish stopped the Terriers, 22-8. The Irish’s Molly Kingsbury led the way offensively by scoring eight points. Rebecca Rider and Taylor Guerrette both scored six and Alana LeGassie added a basket as well. The Terriers’ had four players score in the contest, as Libby Boone, Kayla McGrath, Rebecca Collins and Grace Bemis all made baskets for their team.

In the late game, the Black Bears stopped the Huskies, 17-9.  The Black Bears’ Savannah Rodriguez took over in the third quarter by scoring eight of her 12 points in that period. Taylor Hedrich added three points and Karly Voisine chipped in with a hoop.  For the Huskies, Claire Hopkins had a team-high five points, while Kamryn Gilmour and Kassandra Rouse both had two.

Adult volleyball

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is offering adult volleyball on Monday nights from 7-9 p.m. This program is informal and the cost is $1 per night. If interested, please contact the recreation center at 764-2545 or Tammy Lothrop at 227-0712.

Grades 4-6 cheerleading

The department will offer fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade cheerleading. Registration is under way and the season begins Jan. 29. The registration fee for this program is $18 for Presque Isle residents. Girls interested can also participate in the basketball program as the schedules will not interfere with each other.

XC skiing

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department and the Nordic Heritage Sport Club are offering cross country skiing for grades 1-8 on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m.-noon. Registration is under way at the William V. Haskell Community Center. This program runs through March 12. The fee for the program is $18 per child for the 10-week session.
