100 Years Ago-Jan. 25, 1911

    East Hodgdon — Mr. Frank Clark and Mr. George Tabor of Houlton came out to John Grant’s Sunday, a distance of four miles with Mr. Clark’s auto.

   

Monticello — The Ladies Aid of the M.E. Church served a 15 cent supper at the vestry last Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. The ladies are planning on serving these suppers every two weeks. They are given a worthy cause and should be well patronized by the townspeople and are well worth the small sum of 15 cents.

75 Years Ago-Jan. 23, 1936

    Littleton — James Stone, first selectman of Littleton for the past eight years, tosses his hat into the political arena on a somewhat wider scale than usual this week by announcing his candidacy for the Republican nomination as Representative to the Maine Legislature.

    Agrico contest — Winners of the Agrico Potato Raising Contest at Houlton High School were: Carl Annett, Albert Donovan and Berry Long.

    New Limerick — An all-day meeting of the Golden Goose Club was held at the home of Mrs. Fred Hagan of Cary’s Mills. The time was spent in making quilts. A picnic dinner was served at noon, 13 members being present.

    Houlton — A real novelty in entertainment will be seen at the Temple Theatre when Joe Melanson, the well-known Canadian dog trainer will present his wonderful canine actor, “Doc”. This clever police dog was born in Nova Scotia and has been trained to succeed Rin-Tin-Tin whom he closely resembles. He is valued at $20,000 and insured for a very large sum as he is expected to become worth a fortune to his owner.

50 Years Ago- Jan. 26, 1961

    Robin needs compass — A Houlton resident says it’s true … Mrs. Winn Hemore, Sr. and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Winn Hemore, Jr. spotted a robin on the lawn of the elder Hemore’s home in sub-freezing temperatures. Mrs. Hemore’s problem now is where does she find worms to feed her misguided, feathered friend. In trying to determine the sex of the visitor, Mrs. Hemore opined it must have been a male as a female would have the good sense to be in Florida this time of year.

    HRDC elects — H.R. Golding was elected president of the Houlton Regional Development Corp. He succeeds Paul Coleman. Other officers serving with Golding are John D. Walker, first vice president, Arnold S. Peabody, second vice president, Richard P. Hawkins, treasurer, and Bessie L. Tozier, clerk.

    Houlton High — New choral groups have been formed under the direction of Gladys Tarbell. Boy’s Quartette: Tim Taylor, Baree Ladd, Larry Hall, Fred Lowrey, James Craigs, Raymond Deveau, Clem Josselyn, Michael Henderson. Girls Sextette: Virginia Bell, Nancy Bell, Polly Alward, Jeanne Josselyn, Barbara Howe and Elaine Smith.

25 Years Ago-Jan. 22, 1986

    1,000 points — Action during the first period of Houlton’s game against Van Buren was halted when Terry Cummings topped the 1,000-point mark in scoring. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leigh Cummings, Sr.

    Retires — Houlton Postmaster Richard Niles has retired after more than 40 years of service in the United States Postal Service.

    Students of the month — Hodgdon High School faculty members have chosen the December Students of the Month; Grade 9, Kristy Jones; Grade 10, Montie Graham; Grade 11, Ed McQuarrie and Grade 12, Christal Gallop.

    Promotions — The Houlton Police Chief Darrell Malone presented certificates to Donald McDowell-Mitchell, Lt. Wayne Scarano and Sgt. Daniel Pelletier.
