100 Years Ago-Feb. 8, 1911
Aroostook Times

    Local — At a special meeting of the Congregational parish held on Friday of last week, it was noted to have new pews and the same will be ordered at once.
    Ludlow — Mr. Ward Hand arrived home last week from the West, where he has been for two months.
    Hodgdon — The merchants of the town report that business is very dull, owing to the low price the farmers are receiving for their produce.

    Milliken promoted — The many Houlton friends of C. Morton Milliken, a Ricker graduate, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Milliken of Bridgewater and a graduate of West Point, with an overseas service record during the World War, will be interested to know that he was recently appointed to the War College in Washington, D.C.
    Sliding — Good sliding weather and no place to slide presented a problem, which a meeting at the Town Office attempted to solve. It was decided to close Green Street, River Street and Weeks Street to all traffic from 9 to 12 in the morning and 1 to 6 in the afternoon. These streets will be properly policed to keep out all automobiles.

    Garrison Hill — An appeal is being made by Cora Putnam, local historian and author of “Story of Houlton” for citizens to back a move now under way to rebuild the Hancock Barracks on Garrison Hill as they were in the 19th century when this country was engaged in the “Bloodless Aroostook War.”
    Littleton — The Littleton 4-H Club was held at the home of Mrs. Ivan Bubar. The meeting was opened by President, Virginia Manuel. Girls discussed the possibility of selling carrots at the basketball games in the future at the school. They also made plans for a skating party. The sewing girls started their kerchiefs, Lorraine McCordic made chocolate cookies and Bonita Carpenter made corn chowder.

    Principal search — The Board of Directors of SAD 29 have begun their search to replace Principal Elwood Scott, who is retiring at the close of the current school year.

    New pastor — The Rev. Dr. Foster E. Williams has assumed the pastorate of the Military Street Baptist Church in Houlton.
    Anniversary — St. Mary’s School in Houlton, located on Water Street it was the elegant Mansur residence, will mark its 75th anniversary during Catholic Schools Week. The building was purchased in 1910 for $15,000 as a convent for the Sisters of Mercy.
    Oakfield — Kate Boutilier, granddaughter of Catherine Boutilier has written her first script for the evening soap, “Falcon Crest.” Boutilier is a Windham High School graduate and studied at Boston’s Emerson College. After graduation she was hired as secretary for the production company in Hollywood and after several months she was asked to write a script.
