Six Presque Isle Wildcat swimmers heading to state meet

BANGOR — The Presque Isle Wildcats will have a record six student-athletes competing when the Class B state championships take place this weekend at the University of Maine at Orono’s Wallace Pool.

Andrew Terpening qualified in the 50-yard freestyle and joins Isaac Estey (100-yard breaststroke and butterfly) as the PI boys making it to the state meet.

Girls’ state qualifiers are Erica Hemphill in the 100-yard and 50-yard freestyle, Erikka Murley in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley, Grace Short in the 100-yard butterfly and Shae Alder in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.

At Friday and Saturday’s Penobscot Valley Conference championship meets, held at Husson University, three school records were broke in the boys meet and four others fell in the girls meet.

Nate Dewitt, Brock Cassidy, Estey and Stephen Goulet broke the school record in 200-medley relay Friday with a time of 2:01.73. Dewitt, Terpening, Cassidy and Estey established a new mark in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.45, placing sixth, while Estey owns the new Wildcat record in 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.43.

For the girls in Saturday’s competition, Murley, Alecia Palmer, Short and Adler are the school record-holders in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:31.02, which was good for sixth place in the meet. Hemphill now owns the school mark in the 50-yard freestyle after placing second in 26.42 seconds and she was seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:08.84, also a PIHS best. Also, in 100 yard breaststroke, Short placed fifth in 1:20.41 to break the previous PIHS mark.

Top placements in Friday’s boys meet for PI included Estey’s fifth-place in the 100-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Dustin Drabek placed 15th in the 500-yard freestyle and Dewitt was 16th in the 100-yard backstroke. The medley relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team both placed ninth.

Also highlighting Saturday’s meet for PI, the 200 medley team came in fifth place, Murley was 13th in the 500-yard freestyle and 15th in the 100-yard backstroke, Palmer was 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke and Adler was 14th in both the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.
