Caribou girls, FK boys are MS ski champs
PRESQUE ISLE — Champions in middle school Nordic classic skiing were crowned last Wednesday at the Nordic Heritage Sports Center.
The Caribou girls and the Fort Kent boys captured team titles, while Caribou skiers Anna Soderberg and Brendan Cyr were the individual champs.
In the girls’ competition, the Vikings posted 11 points to win easily over Fort Fairfield (42), Fort Kent (58), Presque Isle (80), Madawaska (88), Ashland (94), Union 122 (113) and Limestone (136).
Soderberg had a time of 13 minutes, 33.5 seconds to finish 1/10th of a second ahead of teammate Sarah Doak. Erin Patton of Caribou took third in 15:18.7 and Fort Fairfield’s Morgann Towle was next in 15:28.2.
Lauren Chapman and Morgan Outing, both of Caribou, were fifth and eight, respectively in helping their team to the title.
Alexis Coiley and Hannah Langworthy, both of Fort Fairfield, also cracked the top 10 as Coiley was ninth and Langworthy 10th.
Presque Isle’s top performer was Taylor Williams, who placed 15th in 17:06.1. Ashland’s Marissa Chasse was 18th in 17:27, Union 122’s Kaitlyn Ring 21st in 17:43.6 and Limestone’s Elly Bencivenga 27th in 18:26.4 to lead their respective schools.
A total of 58 girls competed in the Aroostook League event.
Fort Kent totalled 18 points to best runner-up Caribou (31) and five other schools for the championship on the boys’ side. Madawaska (66), Ashland (76), Fort Fairfield (80), Presque Isle (83) and Union 122 (117) followed.
Cyr finished the 3.2-kilometer course in 11:41.5 to garner the victory. He was 17.9 seconds faster than second-place finisher Kameron Husain of Fort Kent.
Robbie Watson of Fort Fairfield was fourth in 13:11.3, Ashland’s Malcolm Milligan fifth in 13:11.7 and Caribou skiers Riley McDuffie and Michael Marquis were top-10 finishers as they were ninth and 10th, respectively.
Jason Bartley was the fastest Presque Isle skier. He was 12th in 14:01.3. Pacing Union 122 was Dylan Conroy, who was 21st in 15:26.6 out of 73 competitors.
