SIXTH-GRADERS in Casey Johnson’s and Peggy Kelley’s classrooms at Presque Isle Middle School visited the Aroostook Centre Mall Feb. 28 to participate in a hurricane simulation as part of their science classes. Students had the opportunity to step inside a clear capsule and experience 78 mph winds.

The simulation kicked off the students’ weather unit which includes extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes. Experiencing the strong winds are, from left: Marianne Lafland, Nicole Theriault and Sarah Morneault. Each session costs $2, which was paid by the PIMS PTO. Mall officials said the hurricane simulator, which is presently the only one in the state of Maine, will be there until the end of the year.
