Dyer named player of the year

The Big East all-conference basketball awards were recently announced, with Presque Isle senior Travis Dyer and Caribou senior Jenna Selander named players of the year.

Dyer garnered the boys honor after averaging 15.06 points per game, second in the league, as well as leading the conference in three-point shooting at 37.38 percent and finishing second in foul shooting at 80.36 percent.

Selander was the girls’ choice by leading the way in scoring at 18.61 ppg, taking second in foul shooting at 67.7 percent and sixth in steals at 2.89 per contest.

Dyer heads up the boys’ first team, which also includes teammate Alex Tuttle, who scored 12.61 ppg, good for seventh in the conference, and shot 54.55 percent from the field, which was fourth overall. The senior was also fourth in rebounding at 7.94 per game.

Andrew Austin and Cote Card, both of Ellsworth, Jayson Burke of MDI and Chase Vicaire of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln round out the first team.

Oliver Zubrick of Presque Isle (12.5 ppg, eighth in conference; conference leading 60 percent field goal percentage) made the boys’ second team, as did Caribou’s Matt Till (11.61 ppg) and Stephen St. Peter (11.33 ppg). Lucas Phillipon of John Bapst and Devin DeLaite of Mattanawcook were others on the second team, while Evan Eldridge of Bucksport received honorable mention.

Joining Selander on the girls’ first team were Presque Isle teammates Kayla Richards and Chandler Guerrette. Richards, a junior, scored 11.17 ppg, good for sixth in the league, and had a free throw percentage of 68.97, placing her fourth in that category. She also led the Big East in assists with 3.78 per game and was fourth in steals at 3.06 per game. Guerrette, a sophomore, was fourth in scoring at 12.67 ppg, first in field goal percentage at 48.84, third in free throw percentage at 69.51, second in steals at 3.72 per game and third in assists at 3.5 per game.

Other first teamers were Megan Phelps of MDI and Abby Pyne of John Bapst. Making up the second team were Ashley Thayer of Hermon, Ashley Abbott of Old Town, Sadie Wright of Bucksport, Taylor Hawkins of Mattanawcook and Riley Boyle of John Bapst. Honorable mention choices were Abby Paul of Mattanawcook and Hannah Shaw of MDI.

The league also presents scholar-athlete, Paul Soucy Spirit Awards and defensive awards to one member from each team. Recipients were as follows:

The Ellsworth boys and the Presque Isle girls were recognized as league champions, with the Presque Isle boys and the John Bapst girls honored as runners-up. The Bucksport boys and the MDI girls were sportsmanship award winners, with Ellsworth boys coach Peter Austin and John Bapst girls coach Mike Webb garnering coach of the year honors.

Big East Conference awards were presented during the conference’s senior all-star games held in Old Town Saturday, March 5.

Chosen as boys’ senior all-stars were Caribou’s Till and St. Peter and Presque Isle’s Dyer, Tuttle and Zubrick. Tim Prescott, coach of the Wildcats, was selected to coach one of the teams.

Making the girls’ senior all-star team were Selander, Dayna Michaud and Violette, all of Caribou; and Presque Isle’s Chelsea Lynds. PI’s Jeff Hudson served as one of the coaches.
