Wednesday Night Movie Series

 

PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Student Activities Office will show “Black Swan” at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the University’s Campus Center Room 118 on March 30.

This showing is part of the Wednesday Night Movie Series; various movies will continue to be shown on Wednesdays throughout the spring 2011 semester. FMI about this showing or upcoming shows, contact the Student Activities Office at 768-9582.

Faculty Noon Seminar

 

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce that its Faculty Noon Seminar series will continue on March 31 when Dr. Richard Kimball presents “Pathways Between New England and Nova Scotia: A Genealogical Approach” at 12:30 p.m. in UMPI’s Folsom Hall Room 105. This brief, roughly chronological survey of Nova Scotia history (1600 to 1910) will include stories of how many families have affected and been affected by this history. Each instance of New England/Nova Scotia interaction that Kimball discusses will be illustrated by stories of individuals from his own and his wife’s families. The instances covered will include: Native Americans/First Nations, Acadians, Foreign Protestants, New England Planters, Scots-Irish, United Empire Loyalists and German (“Hessian”) soldiers. Kimball’s presentation will take place in Folsom Hall, room 105. FMI, contact Lynn Eldershaw at 768-9749.

Public invited to poetry event

Campus and community members are invited to welcome spring and celebrate Women’s History Month when University of Maine at Presque Isle students host a poetry reading on Thursday, March 31, at noon in the Campus Center. Refreshments will be provided. Public is invited to attend.

 

The event, which is being sponsored by the University’s English Program and its online journal, “Upcountry,” is slated to feature students’ original works, as well as romantic and pastoral poems “from the Greats,” according to student organizer Candice Rivera.

Michel Chikwanine to speak

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will welcome Congo native Michel Chikwanine on Monday, April 4, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center multipurpose rooms. A former child-soldier, Michel grew up amid the terror of the Great War of Africa that claimed the lives of 5.8 million people, including his father. Michel was forced to leave his home and become a refugee at age 11. Today, he is an accomplished motivational speaker, addressing audiences across North America. Michel has spoken to over 100,000 people, leaving audiences with a new perspective on life, a sense of hope through social responsibility and a desire for change.

Michel will speak to UMPI and its community for this special, ticketed event. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance. FMI, contact 768-9582.
