College supporting veterans through volleyball tournament

PRESQUE ISLE – Members of the Student Senate at Northern Maine Community College are preparing to host the eighth annual “Support Maine Veterans” Volleyball Tournament and are looking to the community to participate.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, April 16, in the NMCC Christie Gymnasium at 9 a.m.

While students and employees at the college are encouraged to put together teams for the charity volleyball tournament, the NMCC Student Senate is inviting local businesses, schools, organizations, and community members who want to participate. All participants will receive a complimentary tournament T-shirt, courtesy of the Student Senate.

Each team can be made up of six to eight players and is asked to raise $100 in order to enter the tournament. Teams with one or more players who have competed on a volleyball team will play in a competitive bracket, while the remaining teams participating will compete in a recreational bracket. Both brackets will compete for a traveling trophy. Teams are encouraged to sign up before April 16.

Companies or organizations that cannot form a group of their own, but wish to support the event, may opt to either pledge a donation to one of the competing teams or form an “honorary” team. According to NMCC Student Senate advisor Dennis Albert, teams donating a registration fee of $100 but not participating in the tournament will be listed as honorary teams supporting the effort.

Last year during the seventh annual volleyball tournament, a total of $1,400 was raised to benefit the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou. This year, proceeds from the tournament will again be donated to the Veterans’ Home.

“The money is put towards the activity fund at the Veterans’ for the various activities they do,” said Albert. “It also supports those veterans who do not have family living close by to purchase birthday presents, birthday cards, or Christmas gifts.”

Anyone interest in forming a team to compete in the volley tournament on April 16 should contact Dennis Albert at 768-2757. Registration forms and pledge sheets can be picked up at Northern Maine Community College in the Information Technology Office.

NMCC is looking forward to hosting the annual volleyball tournament this spring season during National Community College Month, along with other year-end activities during the 50th anniversary.
