100 Years Ago-April 19, 1911
Aroostook Times

    Hodgdon — Perley Butterfield and Charles Fanjoy are placing roofing on the mill operated by George Benn.
    Local — W.P. Mansur has a crew at work on a 20-foot by 40-foot store house in the rear of his brick block on Water Street. It will be used for automobile storage.

    Log drivers — Monday morning’s train had as passengers nearly 50 river drivers who were on their way up country points. The wind and sun will soon clear the lakes and streams of ice and the logs will be running.

    Father and son — The firm of Clough’s came into being in Houlton last week when Oscar L. Clough and his son, Harry G. Clough formed a corporate partnership under that name to conduct a retail business dealing in men’s furnishings, men’s work clothing, boots and shoes.
    Guest speaker — Dr. Wilder D. Carr was the speaker at the weekly meeting of the Houlton Rotary Club recently. Dr. Carr spoke about the relatively new use of X-rays in medical science and the increasing use of flavors in powder used to clean teeth. This innovation is more popular among women than among men.
    Sherman — The weather is so cold that we fear the potatoes planted by Colby Estabrook, March 27th, will freeze. Mrs. Vick Titus has had lettuce and radish up for a week or more.

    Young boy rescued — Little David Watson, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Watson fell in to a four foot hole near his home while playing alone and stood knee deep in the icy, frigid water until, heralded by a siren wail, the Houlton Civil Defense Rescue Wagon arrived on the scene.
    Furniture store — Aroostook County’s newest furniture store will make its unofficial bow to the public on April 30 according to Paul E. McGillicuddy, owner and manager of the new establishment. A more formal opening is planned for a later date.
    Monticello — Doris Peterson of Monticello Grammar School has been named the winner of the recent school song contest. The song has been dedicated to Arnold Day, principal of the school from 1919 to 1926 and again from 1946 to 1957. The song is sung daily during the morning assembly.

    County Jail — Work on the total renovation of the existing Aroostook County Jail and construction of an addition to the jail will begin in the spring.
    Ambulance director — Clyde Hiltz, who organized the Houlton’s Ambulance Service in 1969 and has served as its director ever since, has submitted his letter of retirement to the town council.
    Promotion — Robert Hanson, manager of MPG, Houlton, has announced that Allen Green has been promoted to sales representative. He is replacing Frank Hoyt, who recently retired. Green lives in Monticello with his wife, Catherine and two children, Aaron and Samantha.
    Honored — Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Grant have received information that their son Michael was selected as the United States Army Medical Material Center, Europe, Soldier of the Quarter for the period January through March of 1986.
