Trask: Presidency was school highlight

On March 10 and 11, the Maine National Honor Society held its annual state convention. The convention included a banquet and dance on Thursday evening and a day of speakers, workshops, and elections on Friday.
The MNHS Executive Committee took nine months to plan the convention. During these nine months, we chose a theme, planned workshops, a state service project, and speakers. We were really interested in finding ways for young people to volunteer and be involved with service organizations. We satisfied this interest through the State Service Project, Project Linus.
Project Linus is a non-profit organization that distributes hand made blankets to ill, traumatized, or needy children. We asked each NHS chapter around the state to make blankets and bring them to the State Convention were we would present the blankets to Project Linus representatives. Our response from the chapters was phenomenal. We received around 1,000 blankets to donate! This number truly shows what wonderful students we have in the state of Maine.
Throughout the entire convention, all of the students listened attentively to our speakers, and participated in our workshops. Our workshop sessions consisted of speakers from Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Red Cross, Project Linus, and the making of more blankets. It is not every day you see 18-year-old boys spread out on the floor making pink baby blankets!
The state convention also holds elections of the new state officers. The 2011-2012 Maine National Honor Society Executive Committee will have two members from Aroostook County serving on the board; Jonah Bacon – President, from Easton Junior/Senior High School, and Joshua Kovach – Northern Regional Representative, from Caribou High School.
Serving as the Maine National Honor Society President has been a highlight of my high school career. I was honored to represent Easton Junior/Senior High School on the committee and I wish the incoming President Jonah Bacon the best of luck.
