The Kiwanis show was awesome again this year. Lots of fun was had, the chili was amazing and lots of wonderful folks stopped by our booth to donate, sign up for the door prize or just to share a story.

LADIES MAKE CAT BLANKIES — These awesome knitters made Mats for Cats and donated them to the homeless cats at the Central Aroostook Humane Society, located in Presque Isle. The Spragueville Knitters Club take pride in their work and their ability to help others, including homeless pets. The cats are definitely enjoying their new blankets. Pictured from left are: Rose Barnes, Joyce Bither, Carmen Wiggins and Brenda Donovan.
It was wonderful to see old friends and meet new ones. Raffle winners: the afghan winner was Gail Wieder, and the stained glass kitty was won by Diane Hemphil. The door prizes winners: Fred “Schieber” won the pet basket and Henry Furtek win the T-shirt!!
Rabbits!! The Central Aroostook Humane Society just took in 18 rabbits, and we are looking for wonderful, responsible homes for all of them! What can you do with a bunny? They make wonderful pets. Bunnies can be trained to do their “business” in a litter box; they are clean, quiet and loving.
We need dog walkers! The weather is getting nice and our dogs need to get outside. If you have time on your lunch break or just some extra time, please visit the shelter and walk a dog. We are also looking for volunteers to brush cats and take them out of their cages for some play time. Both activities are rewarding for you and good for the animals’ physical and mental health. We also need help with raking our lawns and sweeping our driveway! There is always work to be done, so if you have even a little bit of time, please come to the shelter and help us out. You must be 16 years old or older to volunteer without an adult.
We have some pretty cool stuff coming up:
• Friends of CAHS will meet in May;
• We’ll be at the Caribou Yard Sale May 21-22;
• Kickoff party on June 2 for Paws for the Cause;
• Presque Isle Yard Sale on June 4; and
• Paws for the Cause Walk on June 18.
If you have “gently” used items you would like to donate to our yard sales, we welcome your donation!
Dogs are very in tune with us emotionally. It is good to pay attention to the signs of stress in your dog. Some signs are shaking, panting, not eating, barking and whining. When you see the signs, it is time to get out and get moving. Something is troubling your dog; ask yourself ‘what has changed in that dog’s environment?’ When it is going to storm, my dog Tommy visibly shakes, he paces and his pupils dilate. He looks for a place to hide.Be aware of your dog’s mental health. A well-exercised dog is a happy dog and you will find if you are having behavioral issues exercise can help a lot.
If you are looking for a “friend for life” visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, or give us a call at 764-3441.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
