Cary Library renovations on tap

HOULTON, Maine — Walk into Cary Library and you will see that changes are taking place. A construction crew from contractor Building Etc. has been hard at work since April 18 renovating the facility. A temporary circulation desk has been set up and books are piled up on tables until the work is completed.
Improvements to the library will include a new circulation desk that will be wheelchair accessible, new electrical outlets and Internet circuits, and new staff offices. The offices will be more open, allowing staff to have a better awareness of when patrons enter the building.
Linda Faucher is the library director. She said the decision to renovate came after trustee Gary Hagan volunteered to build a new circulation desk.
“They’re enlarging the staff area. My office will be smaller but they’re putting in glass. It will be more visual so if anyone comes in staff will be there to greet them and to help them quickly,” said Faucher. “They could also see the staff that’s working. It just gives more visibility and I think that’s a good thing.”
According to Faucher the new circulation desk will be staffed at all times, and the larger staff area will create better customer service. She added that so far there hasn’t been much disruption to the public.
“They have been peeking in to see what’s going on and keeping up with it. They don’t seem to mind,” she said.
Marilyn Grendell is a Cary Library volunteer, as well as a library patron. She approves of the changes to the facility.
“I think it’s fine. Any improvement is terrific. Linda seems to know what she’s doing,“ she said.
Construction will continue next week with changes to the ceiling and floors. Faucher said that renovations should be finished by the second week of May.
