Gabriel D. Schenk,
valedictorian
John Bishop, Head of School for Greater Houlton Christian Academy, announced the honor parts for the graduating Class of 2011.
Gabriel D. Schenk, son of Allen and Jeanie Schenk of Island Falls, is the valedictorian.
Schenk has been a student at the Academy since the eighth grade. His steady, hard work has been recognized in the awarding of the Scholar Athlete Award, Maine Principal’s Award and Christian Character Award.
As a Boy Scout, Schenk has earned the highly respected honor of being called an Eagle Scout. He has contributed to an abundance of community service projects including serving Christmas dinner at the Island Falls snowsled club, food drives for the Agape Food Pantry and raking lawns. For Schenk’s Eagle Scout project, he organized the covering of picnic tables at the Island Falls playground.
Schenk was a member of the GHCA basketball team and has played the saxophone in the band. Once being taught the basics of the guitar, he has enjoyed making music with his “stringed friend” anywhere he can. Schenk also enjoys outdoor activities such as canoeing, hiking and fishing.
Schenk will be attend University of Maine at Presque Isle this fall as a business major and hopes to weave his love of music into his career plans.
salutatorian
Hannah E. Emery, 2011 GHCA salutatorian, is the daughter of Alan and Kelly Emery of Houlton.
She has enjoyed her education at the Academy from the day she first enrolled as a kindergartener and has received several academic and character awards including the coveted Christian Character Award more than once.
She has excelled academically, while wholeheartedly competing in varsity basketball, softball and intramural volleyball at the Academy. In addition, she has played clarinet in the band, along with violin and viola in the orchestra. In her sophomore year, she worked backstage assisting with makeup and wardrobe in the musical production of “Annie.”
As a member of the Student Council, Emery has faithfully served her fellow students. This year, as president of the senior class, she has helped her class organize activities like jean day, pizza day, class trip, harvest festival and school fundraisers. She has contributed to her school by helping to produce the school yearbook.
At Shiretown Baptist Church, Emery sings in the choir, regularly works in the nursery and fills in for the junior church teacher as needed. She has worked hard not only at the Academy, but has maintained a job at a day care center, as well as Houlton Farms Dairy Bar.
Emery will be pursuing a nursing degree at Bob Jones University.
