Girl Scout completes Silver Award Project

Girl Scout Troop 677 of Presque Isle would like to recognize Stephanie Winslow of Mapleton, daughter of Willie and Nancy Winslow, who successfully completed her Silver Award Project May 21-22.
The Silver Award is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn and Stephanie has been working for nearly two years to finish all the necessary steps.

On her path to earning her Silver Award, Stephanie has completed the following requirements: the Girl Scout Silver Leadership Award, which is made up of three Interest Projects that helped her practice living the values in the Girl Scout Laws; hands on leadership activities for over 31 hours and setting and achieving personal goals.
She also completed the Girl Scout Silver Career Award, which involved researching possible careers, interviewing adults in different careers, interviewing students studying for future careers and practicing being her own boss.
Stephanie also earned the Girl Scout Silver 4Bs in which she learned about becoming her best self in the future, being part of a group relating to others with respect and developing lasting friendships, developing ideas and voicing what’s important to her, and learning how to take action on what she cares about and how to make a difference.
Stephanie’s final step in earning the Girl Scout Silver Award was to complete a Girl Scout Silver Award Project which, at this point, has consumed 40 hours of work and dedication. She chose “Crochet for a Cause.” Her project theme was focused on teaching the lost art of crocheting to the next generation including Girl Scouts, 4-H’ers, friends and neighbors. She held crocheting workshops at Yarn, Glass n’ More at the Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle. Joining Stephanie was her project adviser and grandmother Wilma Winslow, who has been teaching a knitting and crocheting class for the SAD 1 Adult Education program for nearly 40 years. While there, they worked with youngsters that were just learning to crochet for the first time, as well as others who were experienced and interested in learning advanced techniques. Stephanie also encouraged her students to crochet granny squares to leave with her so she could create afghans that she plans to donate to local charities, an additional project requirement.

Baptist Park news
A challenge has been submitted to all by a Baptist Park supporter. For every $1 that is raised, this donor is willing to match it up to $7,000, and the board is willing to match another $1,100. How can you help us? Send your check to Baptist Park with the words “Matching Funds” on the memo line by June 26 — the first day of camp. Only donations specified “Matching Funds” will be matched. The donor was aware of many upcoming large roofing projects, but the donor did not want to specify how the funds were to be spent. The executive board made a decision to designate 25 percent to scholarships, 25 percent to operations, and 50 percent to buildings and grounds with a priority on roofing larger buildings. Please pray for God’s will in this campaign. God continues to shower His blessings on Baptist Park! All of us at Baptist Park extend a special thank you to the donor and his/her family, and all who participate in this campaign!
We are in need of a camp nurse/health supervisor for Lifting Off Week (ages 11-14). This position requires that we have an EMT, LPN, RN, PA, doctor or a person holding a Wilderness First Aid Certificate. We need to make an addition to the camp brochure! Baptist Park is hosting its first cheerleading camp from June 26-July 1. Presque Isle High School Varsity Cheerleading Coach Jolene Kinney has agreed to lead this camp. The camp is open to cheerleaders entering grades 7-12. The cost for the camp is $225. Cheerleaders will be perfecting cheer motions, learning proper stunting techniques, improving their jumps, practicing gymnastics, and learning cheers and pep dances. Spread the word to any cheerleader you know.

Mapleton Daze events
Mapleton Daze committee members would like to announce some events and activities that will take place during the annual weekend. Jim Burrill is organizing a non-competitive car show. Anyone interested in participating can contact Jim at Jim’s Automotive or by calling 762-5131.
There will be a sidewalk sale for those interested in selling handmade items (craft, baked, etc.) or gently used items. Please contact Suzie Morton at 764-4256.
A new cooking contest using maple ingredients is also being planned. Judges will be taste testing and will select a winner on Saturday. Anyone wanting to enter can e-mail Jolene Blake at jolene082701@yahoo.com or by leaving a message at 764-0980.
Wally and the Virginians are going to be showcased right after the fireworks conclude Friday evening. There will also be other musical acts all weekend and some different stage performers, as well.

New parade time
This year the Mapleton Daze parade will be held at 2 p.m. Line up will still be on the Dudley Road. Anyone wishing to place an entry in the annual parade is asked to contact parade organizers Randy and Lisa Michaud by phone at 764-3866 or by e-mailing lmichaud41@hotmail.com.
