Paws for the Cause Saturday

By Christine Cowett Robinson

Special to the Star-Herald

It’s almost here! Saturday, June 18, is our annual Paws for the Cause Walk to benefit the animals at the Central Aroostook Humane Society.

This is a two-mile walk to benefit the animals. Walkers are asked to get sponsors to pledge money towards your walk, but if you don’t have pledges, you can pay $5 to join in the walk. Registration for the walk starts at 9 a.m., the walk itself starts at 9:30 a.m. From 10 until 11 a.m., Presque Isle Animal Hospital will be offering a rabies clinic; there will be pet portraits, a dog wash and lunch also. Please join us for a tail-waggin’ good time, rain or shine! The Central Aroostook Humane Society is located at 26 Cross Street, Presque Isle. If you have any questions, call the shelter at 764-3441. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and a whole lot of fun. Bring your dogs, your kids and your friends — don’t miss it!

Our shelter is full to the brim with wonderful animals looking for homes. Our website has been recently updated, so please take the time and take a look. You may find your forever friend right at the shelter. It is difficult for me to visit and see every cage full. Our mother’s room is full of kittens too young yet to be adopted, and there are cats just waiting for a cage up front to open up. We have baby bunnies and baby rats, and more dogs and cats than I care to mention. We are offering unaltered dogs for half off the original adoption price, so now is the time to adopt.

I go in each week and each week see poor old Boone and poor old Prince, just waiting for someone to come through the door and take them home. Prince did not even lift his head to look at me last time I went to visit; he just looked at me with his sad blue eyes, like he has given up hope. These older dogs just break my heart. Usually, older dogs are already altered and housebroken. They can adapt to a new home, they can learn the rules, and they can even learn a new name. Don’t walk past the older dogs just because they are old, they still have a lot to offer. Take the time to know them, take them for a walk, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Are you prepared for an emergency with regard to your pets? What would happen if your dog or cat were hit by a car and needed surgery to save its life? These are things we don’t even want to think about. With today’s economy, it is a tough choice, but with proper planning it doesn’t have to be. My suggestion would be to take your pocket change and set aside in a “just in case” jar for your pet. Another would be to collect bottles or to take a few dollars each week from your paycheck to set aside for emergencies. It is our responsibility as pet owners to have an emergency plan in place and then when something comes up and your beloved pet is sick or needs surgery, you are ready, instead of scrambling to find the money. Being a pet guardian is a tough job; it is one to take very seriously.

Don’t forget to get your tickets now for our fish finder.  A winner will be drawn this Saturday!

If you are looking for a friend for life, please visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. Our business hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, or give us a call at 764-3441.
