MONTICELLO – Walter E. Day, 91, left this life Aug. 21, 2011, and has gone to his favorite secret fishing hole in the Dead Stream. He was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Hodgdon, the son of Walter and Mahala Day.
A veteran of World War II, he was a member of Machias Atlantic Salmon Fishing Club, Meduxmekeag Ramblers Snowmobile Club, Monticello Fish and Game Club and Centerville (Canada) Elks Club. He served a term on SAD 29 school board and served for nine years on Monticello Town Council. His main passions in life were growing potatoes on his farm in Monticello, deer hunting at Harvey’s Siding and fishing salmon in the St. John River in Canada. Among his greatest pleasures were the moose hunting trips he took with his friend, Ray Wotton, and all the laughs he shared with the guys at Ray’s camp. He was extremely grateful for more than 66 years of marriage to his wife, Doris (Roderick) Day, and for all the fun, good times and great memories they shared.
In addition to Doris, he is also survived by his sons, Gary, Dan and Phil and wife, Gloria; his sister, Violet (Melvin); a son-in-law, brother-in-law, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Patricia (Ellis); and a sister, Addine (Libby).
He will be buried in a private ceremony at Foster Cemetery, Monticello. Those who wish to make remembrances are asked to donate to Monticello Fish and Game Club, care of Bowers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 579, Houlton, ME 04730.
