Club offers golfing at its best

If you are looking for 18 holes of championship caliber golf in Aroostook County’s largest community look no further than the Presque Isle Country Club.

From the blue tees PICC offers 6,794 yards of golf for a par of 72. If you are looking for a little less of a challenge there are also white tees and red tees for women. Architect Ben Gray made the initial course design in 1957, which was added to in 1984 by Rick Hobbs and Geoffrey Cornish.

Although the club is owned by its members PICC is a daily fee golf course with a ‘Open to Public’ guest policy.

The club is also the site of several major tournaments each summer including the Spudland Open Tournament, which is one of the major amateur golf tournaments in the state and has been bringing golfers to Presque Isle for 44 years on the fourth weekend in July. Golf pro and club manager Barry Madore said most golfers for the Spudland come back year after year and also bring back friends.

“It’s the way we treat the clients. They get three days of golf on a beautiful course for little money. It’s always a good experience,” he said.

Madore, who was been with PICC since 1993, noted conditions this year have been excellent, with quality greens early in the season. He attributes much of that to the new course superintendent and the crew.

The golf course offers power cart rentals, a driving range, a putting green and practice area and facilities include a fully stocked pro-shop, restaurant and lounge.

The country club is available for corporate golf outings, charity tournaments, wedding receptions, parties and class reunions.

PICC is located at 35 Parkhurst Siding Road (Route 205) off Route 163/167 East in Presque Isle and is open May 1 through Oct. 31 weather permitting from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The golf shop is open May 1 through Oct. 31 and limited hours November through April.

The PICC clubhouse can be reached at 769-7431. More information is also available at its website at www.picountryclub.com.

The golf shop can be reached at 764-0430 or by e-mail at abmadore@ainop.com.
