Complete prosthetic/orthotic care

When Northern Prosthetics was first incorporated in 2007, owner and Board Certified Prosthetist Cory LaPlante, CP, worked by himself. In just a few short years, the business has grown to include five employees, and community needs now exceed existing space.

Presently located at 40 North St., Suite 5, construction of a new facility at Academy and Fleetwood street (117 Academy St.) is under way, with plans to open Sept. 19.

“We will be located in the medical district near TAMC to better serve patients,” said LaPlante. “Our new facility will provide a spacious, comfortable waiting area, while increased footage will allow us necessary space for state-of-the-art manufacturing. Our goal of providing the best care possible for our patients remains our primary focus.

“Patient satisfaction is everything to us,” he said. “You won’t find a facility in Maine that is more patient satisfaction driven than us. We don’t stop until both patient and doctor are totally satisfied.”

LaPlante said they offer complete in-house fabrication of all prosthetic and orthotic devices.

“We specialize in both upper and lower extremity prosthetics, as well as all orthotic devices including diabetic footwear, foot orthotics, ankle-foot orthosis, knee-ankle-foot orthosis, thoraco-lumbo-sacral orthosis, cervical orthoses and cranial remodeling helmets,” he said. “We also specialize in all sports bracing.

“We have the ability to fabricate all prosthetic and orthotic devices as well as make any modifications needed, in house, by the practitioner who did the evaluation,” said LaPlante. “What does this mean for the patient? 1) The total process for providing a new device takes a few weeks instead of several months, 2) Because we have two full-time practitioners, all modifications can be addressed immediately, any day of the week, and 3) Ultimately, it means that the patient is provided better quality care in a more timely fashion.”

LaPlante said the company’s ability to provide state-of-the-art orthopedic devices that are fabricated locally “gives us a huge edge on any competition.”

“Also we developed a clinical team approach which includes the attending physician, therapist, orthotist/prosthetist and the patient to attain the best possible outcome,” he said, noting that the business is the only facility north of Bangor with a VA prosthetic contract.
