Good service = happy customers
Good service equals happy customers. If Carrier Logging in Chapman were to have a company motto that probably would be it.
In business since 1990, Carrier Logging provides a number of services, including logging private woodlots, trucking and marketing all forest products, firewood sales (custom cut, split and delivered), house lot clearing and loader truck work. That truck work may entail demolition, large ornamental rock and tree work.
The business, owned by John and Sandra Carrier, has succeeded by putting the customer first.
“Without repeat customers, this area is too small population-wise to succeed,” noted John Carrier.
Carrier Logging and its four employees offer a personalized touch for private woodlot owners.
“Each woodlot is different. Each owner is also, requiring individual prescriptions for every job,” said Carrier. “We continue to offer a very low impact style harvesting method. We have never progressed into the new huge mechanized equipment. We still use “conventional” cable skidders and chainsaws. Using smaller equipment allows us to leave a smaller footprint, creating small openings, and leaving more ground undisturbed. This is also where the personalized touch comes to play.”
Carrier added with smaller equipment comes financial benefits. “With new large equipment comes huge price tags, that creates pressure to produce larger volumes, which leads to careless, sloppy work. With smaller overhead we are not focused on production as much as quality.”
The firewood sales are relatively new to Carrier Logging, but that endeavor has turned into almost full time work.
“We had our biggest year in 2010, producing over 600 full cords of firewood. Last winter, 2010-11 we delivered wood every week except for one week in January. That is something very unusual for us; between the ACAP heating assistance contract, and the increasing price of oil, more people were looking to burn wood,” said Carrier. “It is important for people to recognize the importance of utilizing a locally grown and produced product. We have the unique ability here in Aroostook County to make a huge difference in our dependance on foreign oil.”
For a business to stick around for over 20 years there has to be a reason. Carrier said the secret to success to being diverse, honest and providing quality workmanship.
