VFW undergoes makeover

In November 2009, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hayward-Frazier Post 2599 was on the verge of being closed down by the VFW Department of Maine.

However, after a special meeting was held and new officers were elected and installed, those officers made a promise to the State Commander that they were going to bring the facility back and in even better shape than it was before.

After a year-and-a-half and $65,000 later, the facility has had a tremendous facelift and has seen an increase in membership on the Ladies Auxiliary side, as well as the membership in general has grown by 30 percent,” said Commander Randolph Michaud.

Owned by the veterans, the VFW is located on 6 State Road — better known as Parsons Street — right beside Lockwood Harvester.

“During the reconstruction of the VFW facility, a brand new, state-of-the-art kitchen was constructed, walls were painted, new floors were laid down, and a brand new dance floor was installed, as well,” said Michaud. “The lounge area was all rebuilt with new lighting and new seating arrangements. The dance hall can hold up to 200 people and the kitchen area can hold up to 75 additional people making it a great place to hold a wedding, birthday party, business meeting, etc.

“The VFW has a catering license, as well, and we are more than glad to cater anyone’s party or function,” he said.

The VFW Post 2599 and its members would like to thank everyone that comes to their facility for their continued support.

“As each of you pass through our doors, remember you are supporting a veteran and it may even be a veteran in your family that we might lend a helping hand to,” said Michaud. “Your support and patronage allows us to fulfill our obligations to our veterans by keeping the programs going that support them. We have Bingo every Thursday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. and we have dances every Saturday from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. We have dances on Friday evenings in the winter months and we also rent our facility for any occasion.”

The hall is open Monday through Saturday for breakfast from 8-11 a.m. and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for lunch. For more information, call 764-5441, fax 1-800-504-5365, e-mail phaywardfrazier@maine.rr.com or log onto www.vfwpost2599.com.
