MARS HILL — Herb Young, who was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision Sept. 3 that claimed the life of fellow passenger Nathan York, 51, of Medway, remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, according to an official with Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Young, 52, of Mars Hill, was traveling in a 2001 Chrysler wagon driven by his nephew, Jerome York, 21, of Medway, when a 2010 Ford pickup operated by William Barton, 51, of Mars Hill, struck them head-on as they traveled north of Mars Hill on U.S. Route 1. Barton and Jerome York were uninjured.
Barton was subsequently arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol and possession of methamphetamine. Trooper Shawn Whalen served as lead investigator.
Whalen was assisted by Sgt. Brian Harris, MSP; Troopers Robert Flynn, Dennis Quint and Jillian Monahan of the MSP; Warden Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Maine Warden Service; the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office; and the Mars Hill Fire Department.
Barton will appear in Superior Court in Caribou, although at presstime a date had not been scheduled in the case.
