LIMESTONE — The Eagle golf team has the privilege of hosting this year’s Aroostook League championship match, and coach Tom Albert is hoping his golfers can rise to the occasion on their home course.
Albert has eight players on this year’s squad, and three “have a decent chance of qualifying [for the state championship] as individuals,” he said.
“We are a young team, with only two sophomores and a senior returning from last season,” Albert explained, “so making the state tourney from the team perspective is out of the question in my mind.”
He said, however, that sophomore Meghan Flanagin, senior Shane Flanagin and sophomore Tyler Morgan, are all capable of carding rounds that could propel them into next month’s state event to be held at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro. The three are the Eagles’ returnees.
“Playing at home, where we practice, should help my golfers in their qualifying attempt,” Albert added.
Meghan Flanagin came just one stroke short of qualifying a season ago. Female players who shoot 110 or below will qualify.
The top six male players with a score of 90 or below will move on to the state competition. The top two teams will play in the state team championships, also set for Natanis.
Fort Fairfield, Central Aroostook, Ashland and Hodgdon will join the Eagles in Friday’s Aroostook League championship match, which begins at 9 a.m.
“The course is in great shape, considering all the rain we’ve had,” Albert said. “Craig Phair and his crew at Limestone Country Club have done an excellent job preparing the course for this week.”
Other members of the Limestone-MSSM squad are Jeremy Biastre, Mariah Morgan, Kerine Elliott, Glen Kleiner and Ellyzabeth Bencivenga.
