Soccer summaries

The recreation department’s youth soccer league is in full swing with great games being showcased.

First, the fifth- and sixth-grade co-ed league has proven to be a very competitive league. The Rapids and Crew matched up for the first time and the defense for both teams played great until an unfortunate handball by a Crew player occurred. The Rapids’ Jake Stevens took the kick and ripped it into the back of the net. As the second half started, Isaac Madore knotted up the game with an unassisted goal. Shortly after, Thomas Patenaude put the Rapids back on top with a beautiful corner kick that found the goal. With less than 10 minutes to play, Drew Cameron made a nice pass through the 18 to Madore, who finished off the pass for his second goal of the game as it ended in a 2-2 deadlock.

The next game featured the Sting and Mutiny. The Mutiny’s Eleanor St. Peter started the game off with the first goal two minutes in with a gorgeous chip over the goalie by Zech Morse. With the one-goal lead, the Mutiny’s defense became very difficult for the Sting to penetrate. The game was a defensive battle until the final minute of play when Morse made another brilliant pass to striker Madison Michaud to seal the deal and secure the 2-0 victory.

In the final game of the day the Express and Clash went face to face. Riley Kinney of the Express had made a pretty pass to mid-fielder Jonah Hudson whom ripped the ball passed the keeper to draw first blood. Next, the Clash’s Ellie Goheen had a breakaway and finished it off with a beautiful goal for the first of her young career. In the next few moments, the Express defense had packed it in the middle, making life difficult for the Clash, when an unfortunate handball occurred and gave the league’s leader in goals, Jaren Winger, an opportunity to put the Clash on top. He did so with a great upper 90 shot. As the final seconds wound down, Rebecca Collins of the Express was not going down without a fight and she laced the ball past the keeper to tie the game at 2.

In third- and fourth-grade boys action, the Missiles and Blast went head to head. The Missiles’ Mason Fletcher started the game off right with a goal from mid-fielder Cameron LeVasseur. The Blast was not pleased being behind early when Connor Michaud continued to play great and made a great lead pass to Gage Letourneau in the 18. Letourneau one-timed the ball into the goal. The Missiles offensive attack was just too much for the Blast when Sam Beaulieu made back-to-back goals to close the door in a 3-1 triumph.

The next game of the day featured a one-man show. The Drillers and Sounders were two evenly matched teams until one young man decided to take over. The Drillers’ Ben Graham started the game with a quick goal to start things off. Shortly after, the offensive fury from Graham never stopped. He ended up scoring three more unassisted goals and capped it off with a fifth goal off a pass from Alex Graves at the end of the game. The Drillers blanked the Sounders 5-0.

The Galaxy and Blizzard played the last game of the day. In the first four minutes of the contest, Lily Wardwell made a fantastic lead pass to Libby Moreau, who finished it off sneaking it past the goalie. The rest of the game panned out to be a defensive battle as the goalies played aggressively and did not allow another goal as the Galaxy prevailed, 1-0.

The first game in September featured the Hurricane and Tornado going at it. The Tornado’s Taylor Guerrette had a great day, scoring a hat trick in the contest. The Tornado’s goalkeeper also had a fine performance in posting a shutout. The Tornados ended up holding off the Hurricane, 3-0.

The following day, the boy’s third- and fourth-graders took to the field as the Drillers and Blast matched up. First, the Drillers’ Ben Graham continued his tear through the league being elected to take a penalty kick for his team and drilling the ball passed the keeper. Shortly after, the Blast’s Connor Michaud took over, first receiving a pass from Colby Carlisle across the middle and pounding it into the net. Next, Gage Letourneau made a great lead pass for Michaud to run onto and he duplicated his first shot to put the Blast up a goal. The defense for both teams picked up and shut down the opposition’s offenses and the Blast gained a victory, winning 2-1.

The next day for the boys brought the Missiles and the Sounders to the forefront. The Sounders’ great goaltending was not enough for the highly-skilled Caleb Wheaton of the Missiles. He scored off a great pass from Sam Beaulieu to break the ice. After the goal, the Missiles backed off, played shut-down defense and did not allow the Sounders to score, winning 1-0.

The following game featured the fifth- and sixth-grade Clash and Mutiny teams. These two squads went into the game tied at the top of the mountain by posting records of 3-0-2. The first five minutes were a battle for the offenses with the defenses playing at a supreme level. The Mutiny’s Zech Morse started the game off right for his team by scoring a beautiful goal placed in the upper 90.

Shortly after, Morse gathered a goal kick from the Clash and hammered it passed the goalkeeper to give the Mutiny some room to work. The Mutiny’s defense became relaxed with a two-goal lead when Clash’s Kyle Plourde sneaked the ball into the goal to bring his team within striking distance.

The Mutiny was not slowed by Plourde’s goal as striker Madison Michaud showed off her Abby Wambach-like skills and beat the entire Clash defense, including the goalie, to put her team back up by two goals. The Clash felt the heat at this point and tried rushing a free kick when the Mutiny’s Ifeanyi Sargent one-timed the free kick into the back of the net with authority and put the finishing touches on the Clash team. The Mutiny went on to win 4-1.

In the next game, the Express and Rapids were in search of their first wins. Early in the contest, it looked like the Express was serious with Jonah Hudson scoring the contest’s first goal off a beautiful pass from Kimberly Cook.

The Rapids’ front line would not go lightly when Jake Stevens was the selected penalty-shot taker and knotted this contest up at 1-1. At this point it looked like the game was going to turn into a see-saw battle when Express’s stopper Jacob Sjoberg passed the ball to Riley Kinney, who one-timed it to Cook, who finished the great passing off with a great shot to go back on top. However, the Rapid’s offensive attack was just too much as Stevens ended up scoring two more goals and Thomas Patenaude added a single goal in their team’s 4-2 victory.
