To the editor:
A couple of weeks ago I went to Dover-Foxcroft and attended the fair in their town. I had never been there before and I went this year because the fair was having a class in the horse pull dedicated in my father’s (Harold McCarthy) memory.
I was truly impressed by this fair. First I thought the prices were very reasonable. The price for age 10 and over was $6, ages 5 – 10 were $2 and 2 and under were free. Also when you went into the fair, there was no price to park your car. The fair was Smokey’s Greater Shows and there was lots of rides for young to old. There was a bracelet day from 12-8 p.m. if you wanted to ride all day or you could purchase tickets at the window.
The fair was clean and the grounds were well-maintained. All the grass was mowed and if you needed handicapped parking, that was also available. I took my mother, Janice, with me and was able to park her car right up to where the horse pull was going on.
All the activities seemed to be in the same area. For instance, the horse pull had a ring with a fence up to keep the horses in. Down the hill is where they were doing tractor races for little kids and beside that looked to me like where they did the mud runs. You really didn’t have to walk far to see a lot of things.
My dad always wanted me to attend this fair when he was pulling horses. I never did go because my son’s birthday is the same time as the fair. I wish now that I had attended this fair years ago when my children were smaller. It is a great fair to spend the day with your family.
As for you, Dad, you sure were right about this fair, and you had many friends down there. Also you would have been proud of Mom – she went in the skillet contest and got second place. Three days later she got a check for $20 in the mail.
So if anyone has small kids and is looking for a great fair to take your kids to, I would recommend checking out the fair in Dover-Foxcroft.
