Washburn Memorial Library to host book sale

The Washburn Memorial Library will be hosting a September Book Sale at the Washburn Municipal Building, located at 1287 Main Street in Washburn.
The dates for the upcoming sale are Friday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call Katherine Veitschegger, librarian, with any questions at 455-4814.
Recreation news
The following is the schedule for the Washburn Recreation Department for the next week:
Wednesday, Sept. 28 — 10 a.m. to noon, Harvest cooking at the Rec Center for grades 1-4; 5:15-6:15 p.m. grades 4-6 Rec soccer practice.
Thursday, Sept. 29 — Trip to School Farm and lunch at Mantle Lake. Leaving from the Rec Center at 10 a.m. and returning at 1 p.m. This is for children in grades 3-8, limited to the first 14 who sign up. At 5 p.m. grades 2-3 Rec soccer at Mars Hill, leaving the elementary school at 4:15 p.m. (Group 1).
Friday, Sept. 30 — Hiking at Haystack and lunch at McDonald’s. Leaving the Rec Center at 10 a.m. and returning at 1 p.m. Limited to the first 14 who sign up.
Saturday, Oct. 1 — Grades 4-6 Rec soccer round robin at Caribou. Time: TBA.
Monday, Oct. 3 — Trip to Melody Roller Rink in Caribou. The cost is $5 and the concession stand will be open. Leaving the elementary school at 9 a.m. and returning at 12 p.m. This is open to children in grades K-8. At 5 p.m.. grades 2-3d Rec soccer game vs. Ashland (Group 2).
Tuesday, Oct. 4 — Swimming at Presque Isle Indoor Pool. Leaving from the Rec Center at 12:30 p.m. and returning at 3:30 p.m. The cost is $2.75 per participant. This is for children in grades 3-8. Limited to the first 14 who sign up. From 5:15-6 p.m., K-1 Rec soccer practice.
Happy 80th birthday
A special potluck surprise birthday party was held for Ellsworth Woodman on Sept. 17 at the home of Mark Woodman. Ellsworth turned 80 years young on the 22nd. In addition to many cards and gifts, a John Deere cake was presented by his daughter-in-law, Gail Woodman.
Celebrating this special day with Ellsworth were: his wife Dolores Woodman, sons Edward, Russell and Gail; daughter Sandra (Woodman) Jacobs; granddaughter Victoria Willett; sister-in-law Peggy Woodman; and great-niece Susan Plissey. Friends attending included Ernest and Priscilla Thompson, and David Guerette and friend Kathy.
Clayton family picnic
A Clayton family picnic was hosted by Robert and Brenda Clayton at their camp at Squa Pan Lake on Sept. 10. In addition to the great food, entertainment and songs were provided by Paul Clayton on the guitar and Stan Theriault on the harmonica. A great time was had by all.
Attending were: Athil Clayton, Jr., Fred, Paul, Bob and Brenda, Ellsworth and Dolores (Clayton) Woodman, Dana and Darlene (Clayton) McHatten, Marty and Kim Clayton with granddaughter Emily, Jonathan Clayton and friend Lorie Plourde, Keith and Lana (Clayton) Brooks and son Tyler, Kimberly (Clayton) Wilson and son Denton, Stanley and Nada Theriault.
Friends attending included: Butch and Sharon Thompson, Adam Thompson and friend Kelsey Albert.
The history book entitled “150 Years of Memories” is still available and for sale at the Washburn Town Office Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. It will also be available at the Washburn Memorial Library during evenings and Saturdays.

The cost of the book is $20, with an additional $5 fee for mailing. All proceeds from the book will go towards the Washburn Mill Pond Project.
This heirloom treasure will make a great Christmas gift as well as being a fine addition to home libraries. The 192-page bound edition covers local events from 1861 to current times, providing an overview of life in Washburn over the past 150 years. There are stories of local life, old photos, newer photos and the stories include a concise history of Washburn’s business and community milestones.
Library hours
The library hours for September are as follows: Mondays, Sept. 12, 19 and 26, from 1 to 7 p.m.; Thursdays, Sept. 8 and 22, from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays, Sept. 3 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
