Area seniors venture into the Big Woods

On Oct. 18, participants in the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department’s Take It Outside Senior Series traveled into the “Big Woods.” Eleven area female adults made their presence known in the North Maine Woods, creating many double-takes from passing logging truck drivers.

Recent visitors in the “Big Woods” traveling to Munsungan Lake, as part of the Take It Outside senior series offered through the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department included Lola McBreairty, Pat Cyr, Doris Nadeau, Mary Desy, Virginia Stewart, Nancy Morneault, Pam Moores, Juanita Bouchard, Rebecca Bolduc, Thelma Morin and Pauline Emond

According to program director Neal Sleeper, “ironically, it should be mentioned that these day trips are not exclusively for female participants as men are welcome to join in on these excursions. However the female demographic in the usual male-occupied North Maine Woods, was well represented as our hosts Igor and Karen Sikorsky rolled out the proverbial red carpet to our group at Munsungan Lake.”

Throughout the visit the group discussed many interesting topics including the Native American history surrounding Munsungan Lake and the history of the Bradford camps. The Caribou entourage also toured the cabins and other facilities and witnessed a float plane taking off and doing a ‘fly by.’

Of course a trek into the Maine Woods creates a big appetite and the guests were anything but disappointed as they dined at a sit-down gourmet lunch that included homemade bread, tarragon chicken with mushrooms served over a bed of rice, fresh, native green and yellow beans, homemade applesauce and peanut butter cookies, topped off with plenty of hot coffee and tea.

Participating in the Oct. 8 day trip were Lola McBreairty, Pat Cyr, Doris Nadeau, Mary Desy, Virginia Stewart, Nancy Morneault, Pam Moores, Juanita Bouchard, Rebecca Bolduc, Thelma Morin and Pauline Emond.
