Students from the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior homerooms at Caribou High School have been busy collecting food items for the past three weeks in a friendly holiday competition that resulted in boxes upon boxes of non-perishable items that were delivered last week to the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen in Caribou, by NHS members.

Members of the Caribou High School National Honor Society recently presented Shirley Fortin, manager of the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen in Caribou with a cash donation and boxes upon boxes of food items collected through the organization’s annual Holiday Food Drive. From left are: Fortin, Annie Collins, NHS vice president; Katie Plourde, committee chair; Mackenzie Belyea, committee chair; Ginger Kieffer, committee chair and Caleb Chapman, president of the CHS National Honor Society.
At the onset of the project, Ernie Caron, a member of the CHS custodial staff, collected empty boxes of photocopier paper to be located in each homeroom. The boxes were decorated holiday-style with bows by members of the NHS committee, and left with instructions in each homeroom. In the past three weeks, students and staff members donated generously to the project.
On Dec. 21, the NHS members with their adviser, Kenneth Atcheson, — and Santa too, delivered more than $2,000 in food items to Shirley Fortin, manager of the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen accompanied by cash donation.
The holiday food drive winning homeroom was Room 105, under the direction of Jennifer Plourde. On Friday, Dec. 23 Saint Nicholas (Nick Dobson) visited each of the rooms with a bit of holiday cheer consisting of hot chocolate and doughnuts.
The National Honor Society at Caribou High School sponsors this annual event and committee chairpersons this year were Katie Plourde, Mackenzie Belyea and Ginger Kieffer.
The 2011-12 NHS officers are Caleb Chapman, president; Annie Collins, vice president; Katie Keaton, recording secretary; Elsa Thibodeau; corresponding secretary and Kjetil Rossignol, executive committee member.
