WASHBURN NEWS

On Jan. 10, 2012 at 9 a.m., Allison Heidorn and Dustin Damboise from Aroostook Substance Abuse Prevention will be providing information about the dangers and symptoms of bath salts.
This presentation will be held in the high school gymnasium and will be for all 7-12 grade students. Community members are invited and encouraged to attend.
Bath salts, though illegal in Maine, are becoming increasingly available in our towns and cities. They present a high risk of harm to anyone using this synthetic substance for cocaine and methamphetamines. Use by youth is on the rise in the U.S. Some individuals under the influence of bath salts have been seen exhibiting bizarre and potentially dangerous behavior.
At the request of the Maine Department of Public Safety and the Office of Substance Abuse at the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, school administrators and staff have been asked to provide staff, students and guardians with information about the dangers and symptoms of bath salts in order to protect the safety and well-being of students in the school setting.
Those attending will learn: What are bath salts? How are they used? The effects of bath salts, how substance abuse impacts the teen brain, signs of overdose and use, and how to respond to overdose and addiction.

First big fundraiser
TRACY REED’S science lab was completely transformed these past two weekends as students and parents learned the art of wreath making. This is the first big fundraiser the students held to raise money for their April 2013 trip to Italy. From tipping to decorating, the group did everything and sold the completed wreaths for $20. A couple of the girls sold 50 wreaths! Here, Jennifer Olson, whose daughter Nicole is a Washburn student, holds up a finished wreath.
