Washburn and PIHS continue winning ways

    The high school basketball season slowed down for a short Christmas break, but teams are getting in a full slate of games this week.

    Two and a half weeks into the campaign two girls teams in the region are undefeated. Washburn won two games last week and Presque Isle had an impressive defensive effort on the road against John Bapst.

    Here’s a recap of games played through Monday, Dec. 26:

    CLEAR SKIES — Easton’s Hannah Ferris finds an open lane to the hoop in a game against Greater Houlton Christian Academy on Monday. Easton won, 55-28.

    Easton 55, GHCA 28 — The Easton girls went one game over .500 as they defeated Greater Houlton Christian Academy Monday night at the University of Maine Presque Isle. GHCA plays home games at Weiden Gymnasium.

    Carla Halvorson paced the 4-3 Bears with 22 points and six steals. Monday Desmond added nine points and Hannah Ferris seven.

    Presque Isle 71, John Bapst 15 — At Husson University in Bangor Friday, Megan Ireland scored a game-high 20 points with four 3-pointers as the unbeaten Wildcats posted their third victory by at least 30 points.

    Chandler Guerrette added 12 points and Hannah Graham 11 for 3-0 Presque Isle.

    Emily Tilton’s nine points paced 2-3 John Bapst of Bangor.

    Old Town 38, Caribou 32 — After falling behind by as much as 14 points in the first quarter the Caribou Vikings pulled close to Old Town, but couldn’t get back what they lost early and fell to the Coyotes, 38-32.

    For 0-4 Caribou, Alexa Massey had a game-high 13 points, with Rebecca McDougal tossing in eight.

    Old Town upped their record to 4-2.

    Fort Fairfield 68, Katahdin 25 — The Fort Fairfield Tigers jumped out to a huge first-quarter lead and never looked back, beating the Katahdin Cougars, 68-25, on Friday night in Fort Fairfield.

    Fort (3-1) was led by Amanda Hotham with 14 points, Janae Libby added 13 and Danielle Tracy added eight points. Logan Bubar had 7 assists and Whitney McNamee pulled down nine rebounds.

    Katahdin falls to 1-5 on the season.

    Fort Kent 53, Limestone/MSSM 48 — At Fort Kent Friday, Samantha Carapellucci scored 26 points, as the Warriors remained undefeated. Michela Desjardins added 11 points for 5-0 Fort Kent,

    Stephanie Leighton scored 20 points and Amanda Allen added 11 for Limestone/Maine School of Science and Mathematics, which narrowed a 15-point, fourth quarter deficit to four points but couldn’t get closer as Fort Kent made some key late-game free throws.

    Washburn 76, Wisdom 16 — Washburn remained perfect on the young season by steamrolling the Wisdom Pioneers on Thursday at home.

    Mackenzie Worcester scored 20 points and Carmen Bragg added 19 to pace the Beavers. Maegan Fitzpatrick chipped in with 13 points for the 5-0 winners and Olivia Doody contributed eight points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.

    Tyra Michaud led 1-3 Wisdom with six points while Ashley Beaulieu and Cassidy Ouellette each put in four.

    Washburn was up 55-6 at halftime.

    Van Buren 62, Easton 39 — In Van Buren on Thursday, the Easton Bears ran into a little too much Parisse Rossignol, as she recorded a triple double in leading the Crusaders to a 62-39 win.

    Rossignol had 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as the Crusaders improved to 4-1 on the season.

    For 3-3 Easton, Hannah Ferris led the way with 10 points while Carla Halvorson and Mindy Desmond each put in nine.

    Fort Fairfield 57, Limestone/MSSM 37 — Fort Fairfield’s Amanda Hotham had a big night at home on Thursday leading the Tigers past the Eagles, 57-37.

    Hotham had 31 points and 10 rebounds to lead 2-1 Fort Fairfield. Nicole Giberson added 10 points and five rebounds and Whitney McNamee grabbed nine rebounds.

    The 2-3 Eagles were led by Stephanie Leighton with 11 points, all in the third quarter, and Amanda Allen with eight.

    Central Aroostook 48, Hodgdon 38 — At Hodgdon Dec. 20, Vicki McIntyre and Rachel Grew each scored 21 points to lead the Panthers by the Hawks.

    Mariah Wiley paced Hodgdon with 15 points and Maya Gardiner added 13.

    CAHS is now 3-1 and Hodgdon is 3-2.

    Washburn 80, Easton 31 — On Dec. 20 in Easton, the Washburn Lady Beavers upped their record to 4-0 with a strong performance over Easton.

    Washburn freshman Mackenzie Worcester topped all scorers with 22 points. Olivia Doody added 15 points for Washburn, Carmen Bragg netted 13 and Rayah Saucier put in seven.

    Hannah Ferris paced Easton with 10 points and Carla Halvorson put in seven.
