PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Northern Maine Community College will host three College Info Nights in northern, central and southern Aroostook County Thursday, Jan. 5. The sessions are designed to inform area residents interested in learning about their options for higher education and training offered by the college in the respective regions.
The Info Nights will be held concurrently from 4-6 p.m. in Presque Isle on the NMCC campus in the main lobby of the Christie Building; in Houlton at the Houlton Higher Education Center; and in Madawaska at Madawaska High School in the classroom adjacent to the Adult and Community Education Office. As an incentive, NMCC will waive the course registration fee for those who attend and sign up for a course.
College officials will be on hand at each of the sites throughout the two-hour period to work individually with members of the public who are interested in learning more about the college and the various courses, certificate, and associate degree programs offered locally through the centers in northern and southern Aroostook County and on the Presque Isle campus. Individuals are welcome to walk in at any time to speak with an NMCC representative.
“Info Nights are designed to answer any fears, questions or unknowns that anyone might have about the college,” said William Egeler, NMCC dean of students. “The college hosts Info Night to encourage those who are unsure if they want to go back to college to get their foot in the door. The night’s intention is to get the public familiar with the school and to allow them the opportunity to enroll in one class just to get the ball rolling to further their education.”
College officials are reaching out to area high school juniors and seniors and equivalent home school students to attend the Info Nights and learn more about the opportunities to enroll for college courses offered by NMCC in their local area. Through the college’s On Course for College program, qualified high school and home-schooled students can take a class for only a $30 enrollment fee plus the cost of required textbooks and materials.
“Students who participate in early college programs have a distinct advantage over those entering college without such an experience. Familiarity with the rigor of college courses, learning to navigate a collegiate environment, functioning as an adult/independent learner, saving substantial amounts of money, and reducing credit loads when entering the college full time,” said Egeler. “These are all advantages I wish our area high school students would capitalize upon. This is a great program.”
In addition to information on courses offered at the college, Info Night attendees will be able to learn more about financing their education and about financial aid that is available to many students. A recent cost comparison affirmed that NMCC and its sister campuses in the Maine Community College System offer the lowest public higher education tuition rates in the state of Maine at $86 per credit hour.
Representatives from NMCC’s adult education partners in the St. John Valley and southern Aroostook regions will also be on hand to provide information on the College Transition Programs offered locally in their respective regions. The Maine College Transition Program provides high-quality, cost-effective and accessible pathways to post-secondary education for adults.

Griffeth recently held a Winter Wonderland Photo Session at Wintergreen as a fund-raising event for the center which raised over $300 to help with WGAC operating expenses. She will be unveiling her Photogenic Award from the shoot during Friday evening’s First Friday event.
Wintergreen Arts is hosting her opening reception as part of the First Friday Art Walk — a wonderful cultural opportunity in downtown Presque Isle. Downtown businesses and organizations invite visitors to take a self-guided stroll through the downtown and University galleries, to hear live music, meet local authors and artists, and experience the heart of the community.
Participating organizations include the Turner Memorial Library Gallery, Wintergreen Arts Center, Merchants on the Corner, Sorpreso, Morning Star Art and Framing, Freddy P’s and the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
