The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors picked up two more wins to even their season record to 3-3, while taking the ninth spot in Class D girls.
Last Friday, the Lady Warriors hosted Ashland and came away with a 53-22 victory.
Southern Aroostook took a 16-6 opening lead and extended it to 29-9 at halftime.
“We jumped on them early behind our press, which caused a lot of turnovers,” said Southern Aroostook coach Harris Tucker. “We picked up our scoring.”
The Lady Warriors pulled their press off in the second half, as they were well in control.
“We dropped back to a man-to-man and went to our inside-out game,” Tucker said.
The Lady Warriors held a 46-12 third-quarter cushion.
Sable Altvater pumped in a game-high 18 points for Southern Aroostook, while Jess Tucker scored nine points and Olivia Raymond popped in six more.
For Ashland, Rachel Gillis and Marissa Chase had six points apiece.
Last Wednesday, the Lady Warriors used their height advantage and well-balanced scoring to defeat visiting Katahdin, 57-28.
In the opening quarter, Katahdin’s Megan Merry drew her team to within seven points when she hit a 3-pointer to make it 20-13, but that is as close as they would get. Southern Aroostook went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead for a 35-17 halftime advantage.
Altvater scored all of her 15 points in the first half of action, while Tucker knocked down 10 of her 12 game points in the second half. Mataya Hartin and Raymond each scored eight points, while Katie Goodall, Katie Prescott and Beth Bishop all had four points and rounding out the scoring was Kristen Tarr.
For Katahdin, Merry racked up 18 points, while Brianna Majowski and Lizzie Knowles added four points each.
“We are starting to get more confidence,” said Tucker. “We are working more as a team now. We are pushing the ball and our defense is getting better. Hopefully, we are on the right track.”
The Lady Warriors next game is tonight against visiting East Grand at 6:30 p.m. and then they will play Saturday at Hodgdon when they face the Greater Houlton Christian Academy at noon.
