Planet Aroostook

To the editor:

The Aroostook Agency on Aging recently sponsored several “listening sessions” to allow County residents to meet with local legislators to express their concerns regarding Governor Paul LePage’s proposed supplemental budget calling for major cuts in Mainecare. The Agency is to be commended for providing this opportunity.

The two standing-room-only sessions, were dramatically different in tone. Gov. LePage attended the meeting in Ft. Kent. It was very disappointing to witness the Governor’s treatment of audience members. From the time Gov. LePage was introduced, his remarks took on a belligerent, strident tone. He was defensive, combative and rude; at times taking over to answer for legislators to whom specific questions had been addressed,

A well respected former state representative and senator from Madawaska, Judy Paradis, questioned LePage’s health care proposals that would drastically impact citizens. The Governor’s response: “Lady, I don’t know what planet you are on …” delivered in a mocking, belittling tone of voice. This exchange was met with gasps from the audience.

Judy Paradis is well known in the St. John Valley for the high standard of constituent service she provided while in the legislature. She knows her way around the budget process and she knows Aroostook County. Her questions deserved respectful consideration instead of public ridicule.

This behavior on the Governor’s part is not new. We have repeatedly been treated to his version of public discourse; remember, “Kiss my butt”? “Little beards”, for women? Our state has major problems that require serious deliberation, cooperation and statesmanship. We need leadership that pulls people together, not that divides us with gutter language and dismissive rudeness.

In contrast the Presque Isle session was more orderly and respectful. All attending legislators seemed receptive to citizens’ concerns, and pledged to carry their messages to Augusta, many pointing out that the governor’s budget is unlikely to pass as proposed. I urge our County representatives to reject the Governor’s proposed budget, and to work with colleagues to find responsible health care solutions for all Maine citizens.
