Hello Presque Isle, Maine

To the editor:

I am a researcher with the Medal of Honor Historical Society of the U.S. One of our goals is to locate those Medal of Honor recipients, for whatever reason, have been lost to history. One of these lost souls is Cyrus F. Hayden.

Now Cyrus, according to the book, was born 1843 in Corinna, Penobscot County, Maine and moved to Presque Isle sometime between 1850 and 1860. Cyrus joined the Navy and was present during the actions in Korea in June of 1871. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Color Bearer for planting the colors on the ramparts and protecting it while under fire.

A link has not been found that proves that the Cyrus Hayden buried in your Fairmount Cemetery is this same gentleman. Would there be anyone in the area who may have evidence that states he was in the Navy, earned the Medal, or anything else that will conclusively prove that you have an American hero in your midst?

Please contact the Star-Herald and I will in turn contact that newspaper.
