Presidential hopefuls could learn from the past
To the editor:
We ushered in the new year with a gloomy outlook for the year ahead, with a failing economy, a threat of nuclear war and politicians making more promises they cannot keep.
I went back through some history of our country and it appears there was little change in the way our government operated over the past years. As each new administration took office, things continued as they were. Only the names change, as the country sinks in quicksand. The cheating, lying, cover-ups and the lust for power and wealth accompanied each administration.
We spend billions of dollars each year on research and I feel if the politicians spent more time studying the past history of our country and find out why the same events keep reoccurring, they might know the way to get America off this roller coaster path we are on.
When I look at the history of our government for the years 1819-2009, it seems that the events which took place were created by greed, fear, panic, lack of compassion for the American people, a complete disregard for the wishes of the people, lust for power and wealth and an attitude of “my way or no way.”
Over the years the politicians have changed our government “of the people, by the people and for the people” to a government of the politicians, by the politicians and for the politicians.
Now here we are in 2012, facing an election year with anger, frustration, and doubt. Over the past four years there has been one scandal after the other, leaving the voters asking, is there one in the group qualified to get my vote? When it is all over one of them will be the winner and life will continue on whether it be good or bad.
If the politicians would spend more time researching the history of our government they might find out where we have been and how we got to where we are now.
If you don’t know where you have been, you can’t know where you are going.
