Students eat fresh fruits and vegetables
MARS HILL NEWS

SAD 42 now offers the Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Program at the Central Aroostook Junior High School for grades 7 and 8 for the 2011-2012 school year. The purpose of the FFVP is to encourage students to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, which will reduce the risk of obesity and certain chronic diseases.

Dayna Collins and Noelle Bailey gingerly try some mango as part of the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program at Central Aroostook Junior High School. Some of the items have made a bigger hit than others.

Nicole Gebhart poses with her sample of mango as part of the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program at Central Aroostook Junior High School recently.
All students are offered fresh fruits and vegetables as an afternoon snack twice a week. A variety of items are offered in order to introduce students to some unique fruits and vegetables. Each time a new item is served, the student is given a fact sheet with general information about the food and a new recipe to try. The student then adds it to their cookbook, which they will bring home at the end of the school year.
Some of the items that the students have tried so far this year are plums, pineapple and pomegranates.

United Methodist Women
The Mars Hill United Methodist Women met Jan. 9 in the Church Vestry at noon with nine members and one guest present. Mary Valadez is visiting her sister Elaine Bailey and was her guest.
The first hour was spent enjoying the lunch brought from home. Marie Hewitt, hostess, furnished a delicious dessert for the group.
The business meeting began with President Donna Brewer leading all in the Purpose Pledge and Prayer. Then time was spent by members telling of their acts-of-kindness since the last meeting.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted as read. Correspondence was read by Diane Ketchum.
Copies of the UMW 2012 program were passed out and time was spent in discussion. Some of the group’s regular fund-raising projects were canceled. The group will still hold the annual food sale in March during Winterfest, as well as the annual Fall Craft Fair in November. The Cookbook produced by the members and friends of UMW is a great success.
The meeting was turned over to Program Chair Marie Hewitt, who gave a humorous reading “Through My Window” by Pamela Kennedy — selected from the “Ideals” magazine. She also read a poem “When I Am Old and Can Wear Purple.”
Following the benediction, the meeting was adjourned. Members present were: Donna Brewer, Elaine Bailey, Frances Banks, Joan Boone, Joan Walsh, Marie Hewitt, Diane Ketchum, Ruth Sylvester and Clara Hussey.

Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, Jan. 10, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Andy Saucier of The Aroostook Medical Center. He spoke about celebrating 100 years of health care in the Presque Isle area.
Presque Isle’s first hospital opened on April 8, 1912. Although it has changed greatly since then, one thing remains the same: excellent medical care is the result of a dedicated team of health care professionals and the community working together.
Some events planned for TAMC’s celebration include historical stories, a Birthday Bash in the spring, newsletters and a fall health fair.
Mars Hill’s own Health Center became a part of TAMC in 1981.
Town sign plaque
Now that you have had the opportunity to enjoy the new informational sign located at the Mars Hill Town Office, the Rotary Club would like to ask individuals and families to participate in paying off the balance of the sign, by asking families or individuals to donate a minimum of $100 towards the balance of the sign. To thank you for your donation, we are giving you the opportunity to place a name/names on the plaque to honor someone you would like to have remembered. Each $100 donation can represent an individual or couple.
Our hope and mission is to have the sign all paid for and the memory of your loved ones kept alive each time you view the sign. Thanking you in advance for your donation.
