CARIBOU — A man police believe to be responsible for a slew of home burglaries in the greater Caribou area since July of 2011 has was recently apprehended by law enforcement officials.
Cody Rogers, 22, of Caribou, was apprehended in Presque Isle on Jan. 11 by Maine State Trooper Daniel Deschaine and Officer Mark Gahagan of the Caribou Police Department. Bail for Rogers has been set at $25,000 cash or $50,000 double surety, which he hadn’t made as of Tuesday morning. Rogers is being charged with theft, burglary and criminal mischief.
Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan said that Rogers was found to be in possession of numerous stolen items at the time he was apprehended. Officers believe Rogers is responsible for over 15 home burglaries.
Thousands of dollars in jewelry has been taken from area residences over the last six months in connection with those burglary cases, and the price tag attached to those crimes carries a figure of nearly $20,000 that spans the communities of Caribou, Stockholm, New Sweden and Limestone.
On Friday, victims were given an opportunity to do a walkthrough of the police-recovered items to see if they could identify any of their stolen jewelry; while the effort yielded some success in the eventual reunion of a few victims with their lost treasures, many others were unable to locate their stolen valuables among the recovered items.
While police believe Rogers’ arrest means the closing of over 15 burglary cases, area law enforcement agencies throughout the Aroostook County are dealing with home burglaries and want to remind the public that one of the best defenses in solving these burglaries are vigilant citizens who report suspicious activity to their local law enforcement.
“If you find someone knocking at your door asking you a question that does not sound reasonable or practical and just leave, or ask to use your phone etc, it’s possible they just wanted to see if you were home and you almost became the victim of a crime,” cautioned Chief Gahagan.
The Caribou Police Department and Maine State Police would like to thank the public for providing information that helped solve this case. Working together will always produce a safe community, they say.
To report suspicious activity in the Caribou area, citizens are encouraged to call the Caribou Police Department at 493-3301; Limestone residents can contact their local police department at 325-0912. Suspicious activity can also be reported anonymously to Aroostook County Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-638-TIPS. In an emergency, all individuals are encouraged to dial 911.
