Flewelling wins geography bee

On Friday, Jan. 6, lo-eastonFlewelling-cx-sh-03  Jacob Flewelling, a seventh grader at Easton Jr./Sr. High School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee and a chance to win a $25,000 scholarship. The school-level geography bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the annual National Geography Bee.

The Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories participate in this academic competition.

The school winners, including Jake, will now take a written test. Up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state bee on March 30, 2012. The top 100 in the state qualify, and the state winner will advance to the National Geographic Bee in May in Washington, D.C.

Anyone can brush up on geography with GeeBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeaoraphic.com/geobee. which poses five new questions a day from previous National Geographic Bees. The National Geographic Society is the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organization. Founded in 1888 to “increase and diffuse geographic knowledge,” the Society works to inspire people to care about the planet. It reaches more than 300 million people worldwide each month through its official journal, “National Geographic,” and other magazines; National Geographic Channel; television documentaries; music; radio; films; books; DVDs; maps; school publishing programs; interactive media; and merchandise. National Geographic Channel has funded more than 8,000 scientific research projects and supports an education program combating geographic illiteracy.
