Caribou wrestler Deion Caudill captured the PVC wrestling title at 182 pounds on Saturday. Caudill hopes to add an Eastern Maine title this weekend.

In the first match, Caudill defeated Michael York of Bucksport by fall at 43 seconds. In the second match he topped Josh Fowler of Ellsworth by decision, 7-3, and in the final Caudill beat last year’s state runner-up, Corey Bjornston of Foxcroft Academy by major decision, 8-0.

“I have seen Deion wrestle in about 50 bouts during his career and this was his best performance to date,” said Caribou coach James “Chico” Hernandez.

Caribou only had six wrestlers compete in the PVC championships due to injuries, illness and not making weight.

Caribou wrestler Brendan Wood finished second at the PVC Championships on Saturday.

Brendan Wood finished second at 126 pounds. He defeated Josh Silva of Mount Desert Island by fall at 1:05 in the first match. Wood downed Isaac Whittemore of Foxcroft Academy by fall at 2:02 in the second match, before losing to Bryce Webber of Dexter by decision, 4-2, in the final.

“Wood is looking very good right now,” said Hernandez. “All we need to do is tweak his style and approach a bit before the Eastern Maine championships.”

At 120 pounds, Robert Caudill placed third. He lost to the MVP of the tournament, Chris Weiss of Washington Academy, by fall at 4:50 in the first round. He then rattled off three wins to gain the bronze.

“It was a good lesson to have this happen before the Eastern Maine Tournament this weekend,” said the coach. “It gave him some valuable experience against a quality opponent.”

Other Viking wrestlers were Rebecca King, Jacob Bither and Matt Manter.
