PRESQUE ISLE — Energy efficiency and tips to help consumers save money will be the focus of an upcoming workshop, hosted by Maine Public Service.

Nancy Chandler, coordinator of energy conservation and education services at MPS, said there are a number of ways individuals can reduce energy costs by taking simple steps, be it at home or at the office.

“Turn off computers and their peripherals when not in use. Unplug such ‘vampire’ appliances as satellite TV systems and game stations that suck electricity, even when they are off. Replace light bulbs with compact fluorescent or LED bulbs. Install weather stripping on doors leading to the outside or garage,” said Chandler. “And, of course, turn down the thermostat when leaving home.”

These are just a few of the energy- and money-saving tips being given out in the free MPS workshop on saving energy and money.

“There area many low- and no-cost energy-saving strategies that can save money so renters and homeowners can apply the savings to other household expenses,” said Chandler.

The “Save Energy, Save Dollars” workshop focuses on energy efficiency and offers such free take-home tools as fluorescent bulbs, power usage meter, refrigerator gauge, LED night light and pipe insulation. Co-sponsored by Northern Maine Community College, event takes place at NMCC’s Edmunds Conference Center, 33 Edgemont Dr., 6:30-8:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
