The Houlton cheerleaders may not have brought home any state hardware, but they performed very well in front of a capacity crowd at the State Cheerleading Competition at the Augusta Civic Center last Saturday.
The Houlton High School cheerleaders have advanced to states 15 out of the last 16 years.
The Houlton cheerleaders came in fifth, relinquishing their state crown to this year’s winner, Central of East Corinth. Runners-up was Lisbon, followed by Orono and Dexter.
“The girls were pleased with their performance, as were we,” said co-coach Shari Good, who instructs the team with Julie Dunn.
The Houlton cheerleaders performed their “Salsa” routine with enthusiasm and spirit.
“It was executed without any drops,” said Good. “The girls scored high in energy and motion technique.”
One of the biggest differences between Houlton and the rest of the teams was in tumbling.
“We only have one and the winning team had eight,” Good said.
The Houlton squad graduates one senior, Jaclyn Hodgkins, but returns Sarah Bouchard, Lauren Bragan, Jackie Condon, Emily Dee, Emily Dickison, Kristen Farwell, Haley Flewelling, Elizabeth Flint, Taylor Forest, Madeline Good, Erynne Howland, Autumn London, Ashley McNinch, Makala Miller, Crystal Nason, Jennah Rand, Marugerite Russell, Caleigh Sullivan, Mikaela Tuttle, Jasmine Hardy and Morgan Wotton.
