HOULTON, Maine — Houlton Congregationalists will resume worship services after taking the winter off. The Congregationalists have been without a home since selling their church several months ago.
The congregation took a two-month hiatus, starting in January, to give members an opportunity to visit other churches in the area and to take time to consider their future plans. After weighing several offers, the members of the First Congregational Church of Houlton, United Church of Christ, have accepted an invitation from the Houlton Unitarian Church to hold services in their building, according to Dale Holden, pastor emeritus from the Congregational Church.
Rev. David Hutchinson, pastor of the Unitarian Church on Military Street, welcomed the Congregationalists and led worship at their first service March 4. Beginning Sunday, Pastor Amanda Wagner, who served the church last fall, will resume her role as Sunday worship pastor.
“It was the consensus of the membership to begin worshiping together again, believing that they still have a mission and ministry to each other and the greater Houlton area,” Holden said.
The small congregation will explore its traditions and seek ways to engage others in the ecumenical community. First Congregational is Christ-centered, progressive and welcoming of diversity. All are welcome to the Sunday service, starting at noon.
