Heroic deeds are focus
of 14th annual Real Heroes Breakfast
Officials with the American Red Cross-Pine Tree Chapter, Northern Maine Community College and WAGM TV have announced the selection of the 2012 Real Heroes for the 14th annual Real Heroes Breakfast. This year’s event will be held Friday, April 6 at 7:30 a.m. in NMCC’s Edmunds Conference Center.
The heroes who were selected, assisted others during an emergency situation or provided incredible assistance that made a difference in someone else’s life. These brave individuals were each nominated by the public and later selected by a group of community leaders because they went above and beyond the call of duty to exhibit a true act of selflessness. Their heroic acts embody the principles and ideals of the Red Cross’ humanitarian mission. Nearly two dozen nominations were received this year.
This year’s awards will go to several individuals and groups: Brett Spinning of Presque Isle; Jean Poitraw of Ashland; Connor David Nicholson of Van Buren; Tom and Judy Deschaine of Presque Isle; Jeff Stephenson of Mapleton and Bev Cullins of Sherman; Andrew Peabody of Houlton and Wendell Wood of Houlton; and a group of six including Linda Majka, Travis Jones, Tina Jandreau, Jonathan Nadeau and Richard Stoliker, all of Fort Kent; and Curtis Gagnon of Wallagrass.
Extra Mile Awards for ensuring the Red Cross mission is met go out this year to OfficeMax and Loring Job Corps Center.
“It’s an inspirational morning that you will not want to miss as we recognize our community’s local heroes during the breakfast program,” said Joyce Knorr, Aroostook County branch manager of the Red Cross. “I encourage folks to come hear their stories-it’s an opportunity to hear good news for a change. This is truly a heart-warming event.”
Nearly 200 civic and business leaders will gather in support of the special celebration and Red Cross fundraiser. Proceeds from the event will benefit the local Red Cross disaster relief and emergency preparedness programs in our community.
Tickets can be purchased for $25 each and seating is limited.
